Arizona Chickens

Yes, good morning everyone! I really hope that it does not rain. I have lots of yardwork that I want to get done.

Getting ready to build our coop over springbreak. Our friends are removing their wooden fence and putting up a block wall. So guess who gets their wooden fence? Yep, thats right... Meeeeeee. It will be perfect and Free for making our coop. I cant wait!

Actually, I hope it DOES rain, but not before i finish in the garden and the DH is done weed whacking and cutting down all those branches from last week's storm.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is "Steve" being born. We were surprised to see that he is so black. His legs are also black. His mother is a cream colored Polish, his father, an Ameraucana. Hmmm...

And here is the most recent hatchling:

The one with the unabsorbed yolk seems healthy, but unfortunately, he ripped open the sack and has been trailing yolk all over the bator. After a while it seemed to stop leaking and s/he still seems healthy, so we will see.

There is one that was born and looked healthy, but is now laying on its back in the corner and really not moving much. Any ideas what might be wrong? I guess we will just watch and see.

We have one more that is almost here. That will make 7. I definitely put 15 live chicks in at lockdown. The interesting thing is that all the eggs on the right have hatched. The 8 eggs on the left have not even pipped. What is up with that??

Laree - I'm excited about the wall additions! It's a big wall with lots of empty space left

For those that have not been to my house, here is what we are talking about...

One day I was cleaning my house and came across drawers full of stuff that I could not throw away, but didn't have anything else to do with. So I put it all up on my wall!!

Aside from my wall, I've been dealing with a pretty gnarly case of "The Ickyness". Not sure whether it was Coccidiosis or Corzya (sp?) but they've had meds in their water for a week now. Unfortunately, I lost 2 of them, but the rest seem to be getting better!!

Cluckin'- OH NO! Your poor babies! Which ones did you lose?

Cap-WOOOOHOOO!

Edited: The DH weed-whacked the yard: Happiest chickens ever.
I spent some time in the garden (yay!). Planted a bunch of stuff, yanked some stuff, got all dirty, had fun. Unfortunately ALL the turnips went to seed before even developing turnips!

If anyone is in the area, I have an excess of chicken-friendly cabbages, radish greens, carrot tops you are welcome to. Not enough to warrant a special trip, but if you are out by PV mall anyway.

The Aloha chicks hatched 1/1/10 were poking around in the garden, so I caught the cockerels for some pics. neither is ideal, but they are sweet as pie and pretty to boot!

Thought you might like to get a better look at his feathers.

And yours are really pretty, I really like the coloring of the first one.

He's yours if you want him. He carries mottling on both sides, but I don't think he'd mix well with anything I have: I think all his chicks (with my hens) would end up barred or black. He needs to mix with something white or buff/light mottled.

I am also working on getting you some rockin' hens.

Sock- I still heart him. You are next on the "chick list"...

gckiddhouse: I may have mismarked that egg! A BWA X Polish should be white or cream at hatch.

The Polish and the Ancona have eggs that are almost identical, so you may have a BWA X Ancona there. We'll pray it's a pullet and you'll still have a beautiful easter egger. My Ancona started out almost all white and then grew in black mottled feathers. weird.
