Arizona Chickens

He's yours if you want him. He carries mottling on both sides, but I don't think he'd mix well with anything I have: I think all his chicks (with my hens) would end up barred or black. He needs to mix with something white or buff/light mottled.

I am also working on getting you some rockin' hens.

Sock- I still heart him. You are next on the "chick list"...

which one are you talking about....I was talking about the one with more white on him..the one where you can see your son in the picture too..I am not sure how i counted

The egg looked exactly the same as the other three white eggs. Does the Ancona lay such a small egg as the Polish? Sounds like even that combo would have produced a light colored chick. We must have gotten all the recessive genes. We will have to see what it turns out like...

I have a chick that seems stuck. Should I help it and how do I do that? It has totally zipped and has been in there all day peeping, but it doesn't seem to be able to get out. The other chicks have really rolled it around. We are about to take the dry chicks out and give the other eggs a few days and see if they hatch.

Will get pics of dry chickies.

yup, that is the one. He is mostly black and white, with only little bits of brown popping up. He started with some brown, it went away, and now it is showing again.

I think he will be quite pretty, but my lack of genetics knowledge is a hinderance. Patch's questionable heritage is a hinderance too.
The cockerel+ something buff, or a speckled sussex should be fine for the Aloha project. Him + something with a lot of white or black pretty much ensures a barred or black chicken.

Genetics...aahh. Chicken genetics, too HMMM. No idea where to start with that.
I know rats to a jiffy but not chickens.

I think most of the genes would be dominant and recessive, not so many co-dominant.

You'd think that, but it isnt true. To hurt your brain a little....

EDITED: Just for funsies, here is what Henk (the creator of the calculator) thinks Patchwork, my roo, is:

Co/Co or Co/co+
B/b+
mo/mo
EVERYTHING ELSE DEFAULT

which means he thinks Patch is really accidently sex-linked, or crele.

I would help it,... get a paper towel with warm (not hot) water and dab the entire zipped area, start where the beak is and then work around the zip carefully. If you see blood, wet the area and put it back in the bator, if there is no blood continue to the top is popped off, wet it a little and put it back into the bator to work it's way out of the bottom part of the shell on its own. That's one of the reasons I always hatch in cartons. also, be certain to add water when you open the bator.

Thanks, Mahonri! Chick is out. Seems ticked off.

8 eggs still sitting there. They were all alive when I put them in, so I will wait.

Watching Napoleon Dynamite. "Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting with chicks online all day. You know I'm training to be a cage fighter" -Kip

Laree, if you've seen the movie, maybe the silly quotes will replace the Count? Would that be better or worse?

So how many total? Seven?

Yes, seven. One still in bator, 6 in brooder.

So hopefully they were on the cold side of the bator.

Is your humidity over 65% right now?

Keep it wet in there.

On my last hatch, I helped out TWO that hadn't even pipped. I could hear them inside but they were shrink wrapped, Candled and pipped them myself.

One popped right out and started walking around. The other one sat in the big end of the egg for an hour and then was out and about.
