Arizona Chickens

I'm sorry to be a downer - I'm feel like I almost have no good news to share anymore.

Crappy home-coming.

One of my 3 remaining App Spitz is gone - Hoppy - she was the one who would hop up on my knee when I sat down to hand out treats

and Twisty (GSL with a cross beak) was laying in th bottom of the run less than half alive, covered in ants. She had swollen eyes an looks to have succumbed t that shitty mycoplasma.

She was doing nothing but suffering so I had to put her down. To top it off I had no CO2 & had to use a hatchet.

This sux.

I ****'n hate this!
Ohhh Mikey! I am heartbroken for you over such news.

You certainly have had your share of issues.

And I am glad to hear Hoppy has returned. Sounds like she loves her Papa and vice versa.

Welcome back. Was just wondering where you went.

Thanks, Chris. Let's see...I went up to Colorado to visit my sister, then to Payson to visit the parents...I guess I'm trying to stay out of this heat! And in between all the work we're doing here and the 5 kids, 3 dogs, and 10 chickens, I haven't had time to keep up!

On a chicken related note...I'm FINALLY getting blue eggs again! My perpetually broody Ameraucanas are starting to take my BBQ threats seriously.

Eggciting day up in the high country! We got our first pullet egg from one of the BR girls. It is so cute, of course.

With 8 yo DD, Brooke, she found it

The BRs are just 18 weeks old. She even laid it in the nesting box like a good girl.
We love our chickens!!!!! They never fail to make us smile and laugh. And their sounds are just so relaxing.

To all the Newbies !

I thought I'd share a few tips that might help someone.
I freeze water bottles and put them inside of the waterers to keep the water cold during these Heat waves in AZ. TO keep the algie from growing I add a little apple cider vinager to all my animals waters. Water misters are a life saver ! And when my chicks hatch out, I put them in a rubbermaid tub with NON skid rubber shelf liner and change it out daily. They are easy to wash of and reuse and I found some at the 99 cent store

Works great and keep your chicks from getting spraddle leg because they dont slip.
Now if somebody could give me a tip on this pesky FLYS. this is the part of monsoon I dont like THE FLYS are thick and everywhere !
