I got to the Stock Shop a moment too late; they were out of Andalusian Blues, I had my heart set on one, but all in all I think I did OK, got EE's, Marans, Silkies, and a Production Red cuz my husband wanted a "super layer". Managed to get 7 chicks total!! Hopefully the silkies are pullets, we'll see

Plan on FINALLY finishing the run today when the other chores are done. Then I need to find some netting of sorts for the top because the cat is driving me BONKERS being inside all the time. He's getting on the counter and chewing into loaves of bread, as well as his bags of treats. Can't have him be an outside cat without covering up the run though...

Still no eggs from the CM or the EE, but everyone has stopped sneezing, finally. 2 weeks of Sulmet force feedings was fun... NOT.

I don't think I've posted a pic of the (mostly) completed coop...

Meh... they're alright.

KIDDING!!!

We had a good time hanging out with them at the Ostrich Festival last night. The hubbies went on a gut-wrenching G-Force ride that I didn't even want to LOOK at, let alone RIDE.

Speaking of hubbies... mine is outside detailing my car... unsolicited!

My cutie patooties are pretty awesome if I say so.

It was very nice to meet you and J, Mahonri. The SS & company are caged inside the big coop for the next couple of days. Right now Olivia is having a staring contest with the sizzles and OEGB. No noise, only hating with their eyes.

BTW- apon further examination, I think J may be correct about the mutant roo Ducky. Has it crowed? I couldn't find a pointy feather anywhere on it. I am going to wait it out & see. Tell your boy if he is right, I'll buy him lunch.

Edited:

HATING and Looooving

I also made a nesting box (of a different sort) when I got home....

I bought the chicken pot at Bakers- my fav lunchtime destination.

You got there a moment too late?!? I'm sorry - I was probably the one who beat you to them. We went to the Stockshop today and bought four blue andalusions to raise along with my newly hatched chicks. I only plan to keep two of them, but got extras to make sure I get two blue ones, not splash. I already have 2 splash chickens and really want some blue ones. I'll probably be advertising the two extras in about 4-5 weeks (once they get all their feathers in and we can pick our favorites) - if you want me to let you know before putting them on craigslist, send me a PM and I'll check with you first.

You got some Marans at the Stockshop? Besides the 4 BA, I picked out 6 barred rocks, & 2 buff orpingtons (free feed with purchase of 12 chicks), but didn't see any marans.
I would have purchased a couple of I had seen them.

Mahonri --
Just this afternoon, I notice that the dark ameraucana you sold me has gone broody! She has picked off her breast feathers, stayed in her nest all day (even after I booted her off and put her out into the yard) - she is now sleeping there. Normally, I would be excited, but I just finished hatching eggs and even picked up some brown & white egg layer chicks to go with my upcoming blue egg layers (wheaton ameraucanas, etc). If she would have gone broody 5 weeks ago, she could have hatched her very own babies, instead of me having to constantly watch that incubator!

If I do let her hatch some eggs, the new chicks would be 4-5 weeks behind the chicks we have now. I'm not sure now, whether to try and purchase some eggs for her to hatch or to try and break her of it.

Nessa - Are your chicks in yet? Do you have any speckled sussex this time?

OMG, was that you with the box of chicks, and when we asked how many chickens you had you said "20" and we said, "... not counting these?!" (or something to that effect)

I ask because when I finally got the guy to get the chicks for me, I started by saying I wanted some Andalusians and he said, "Oh, that lady beat you to them! She just took the last ones!" That's how I know I was thatclose.

If so, that is TOO funny!!

It was very nice to have met you without knowing!!

Also, the Marans were in the battery brooders (I think that's what they're called? The ones that look like condos ha) where they had the baby turkeys and Delawares. They had a bunch so you could probably go back and get some still

I just wanna say, the chicken channel is rolling in our household, and even DH has snuck off to watch it for a while

I could just sit there and watch them for hours!!

Buenas tardes!

Just got back from a wedding out in Peoria. Wish I'd have gone early so I could stop at the Stock Shop.

The wedding was nice but not the kind of wedding I am accustomed too.

I've gotten a few hits on my Craig's list add.

We'll see what happens.

I just got a PM from another Ameraucana breeder, she says that only 1 in 30 chicks will turn out to look "spectacular"

... that's a LOT of chicks to hatch to get a few great looking birds.

Yes, that was me! Nice to have met you too! I was kind of embarassed admitting to you I already had 20 chickens and was buying more! My husband was already lamenting the fact that I was buying 12 chicks to go with the 2 week old easter egger & ameraucana chicks I already have at home -- well... I had planned on about 6, but they were giving away 25 lbs of feed for every 12 chicks purchased

Was that your little boy? He is adorable. I had my husband, grown daughter, 15 yr. old daughter, & 4 yr. granddaughter with me because we were on our way home from DGG's kickball game.

What kind of marans were they? I'm guessing cuckoo marans? Were they newly hatched? What to do....? I really have plenty of chicks now, but dark egg layers are tempting. Maybe they'll let me bring back a couple of barred rocks tomorrow and pay the difference
