Congrat's on the new babies! Good luck withthe build.

Now that you mention it, my DH picked one up about 7 months ago and it is in my computer room, waiting for him to fix it. I wonder if I could convince him to help me make an incubator out of it. Do you all have instructions on how to make one? Or is there a post on BYC?

Thanks!!!

Angie

redrocketrooster: Thanks for the lead on the craigslist listing for chicken wire. They were very close to where my foster son works, so I was able to drop him off and pick up the wire. It will help a lot in putting the coop together!

Nessa - DD and I really enjoyed our visit and meeting all your girls. You do have quite a process going on over there with a super-handy hubby to finish it all up! It will be nice when it is finished. Boy, do your chickens have it nice out there in the chicken taj mahal!

NoSkivees - WOW!! That is a lot of chicken you got there! I think you should build a really big incubator, though, so you can hatch 82 more!!

Chrystalgail showed how she made hers and I loved it when I saw it. It looked hard but its alot easier than I thought once I saw what I was doing. The thing I worried about most was the electrical part. At home depot they have these porcilin (sp) light fixtures that are $1.49 that can be mounted in the fridge. It has no wiring so you'd need a cord. I am not handy enough to try to make a plug so I bought one that was premade and it was as simple as wrapping the wire around a screw and tightening the screw. I was worried that I would do it wrong but the cord has a smooth texture on one wire and a ribbed texture on the other wire so I was able to tell which was hot and nuteral. It was easy.

The fan was $10.99 at radio shack. I didnt buy a power cord because I have a box full of cords that I can kill if I need to, and they wanted way too much for a cord at radio shack.Target also has a small cheap 3 speed fan that is $12.99 that might fit in the bottom of the fridge too.

I think I found the temp/humidity gauge at Home Depot for about $16.99. I havent bought that yet. I think Target online has one at the same price too and off hand I cant recall which one was better.

The repti temp 500R I got from ReptileSupply.com and it cost $38 including the shipping cost. I hadnt planned on buying one but Chrystal really likes hers and I thought that if she likes it that much its going to be worth it in the long run to spend the money. She said its easy to use also.

I havent made the racks for eggs yet. My fridge has removable shelves and I was hoping to be able to use them somehow but I think I will end up having to remove them and make all new racks. If I end up needing to heat the water I will steal the heater from the fish tank.

When my husband has a few days off, I am going to ask him to do all the drilling and make egg baskets for it so I can start testing it out and see how it works out. I love the fact that it has a glass door and I can see in without opening the door.

I have one of these and it works like a charm! So much better than the water heater thermostat I was trying to work with in the beginning! To me, the extra price is worth it!

Okay this has nothing to do with chickens other than the fact that a fellow BYCer shared it with me. I make a point everyday to learn at least one new thing. Today was very interesting and this is what I learned.

"Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis a type of lung disease and is the longest technical word in the english language."

If it stumps you then you can go to the following link and hear the word as well as read the definition.

Pretty neat word huh?

Laree, I got to thinking about your unsuccessful hatch. I don't know your circumstances, but I too have had some really bad hatches. The kid across the street also has had poor hatching success. We both used Little Giant incubators.

He has had some really good hatches with broody hens though.

There is a huge power line running through the neighborhood and I am beginning to wonder if there is some power surge or electromotive force at work here. My son took the Little Giant to his house about five miles away, and he has since had several successful hatches with it.

Are you also under a power line?

Rufus
