Arizona Chickens

I was told 3 days. Otherwise the chick will resist mothering and the mother will peck the chick. I got that 3 days was pushing it. That is what I heard. It will be interesting to see if anyone has experience and other wisdom.

Hmmm, maybe I will try and see. Good day for an experiment I suppose.

Let us know. I have also heard that the time before giving the mother the chick should be about the time to hatch. It would be great if giving out chicks to the mothers worked even if it was just a week or so and the chicks were older.

The eggs were due to hatch tomarrow. I tried giving her two different chicks. The chicks kept wandering off. They liked being under her but then they would jump out of the nest box and take off. So the mothering part wasnt working for them. They were already to independent.

Oh well. It was worth a try. Now the broody is kicked out of her nestbox and wandering the yard. Not too happy about it either. At least I tried.

I was the one that told CheerfulHeart that it was 3 days and she already said what I was going to say. The momma wants to be a momma worse than that chick wants a momma at that point. I guess you have that figured out now though. There is only a small window where you can do this otherwise the baby is past the point of learning this.

On a different note, I spoke earlier of my missing wall. I left the door open behind me because frankly what is the point of closing it, right? My son says mom you have to shut the door or bugs will come in!!! I looked across the yard and hubby overheard and was almost on his knees with laughter

Nessa - That is so funny about your son. You have taught him to close the door!

Thank you again for the info on the chicks.

Sock - It is always nice to have two witnesses. Thank you for reporting that your experience confirmed what Nessa shared.

My earlier lamentings about the incubator stirred me into action. I have had an eye on CL for a cheap broken wine cooler for about 10 months, and nothing has popped up---with the exception of that 7 foot tall wine fridge for free that I passed on.

So today I posted a "wanted" ad on CL, and within 5 minutes I had a lady who wanted to drop one off on her way home. It was in her trunk, and my house was closer to the Airpark than Goodwill. She didn't want any money for it, and I even had to talk her into eggs. Woo hoo!

Now I need to get a heat source--lots of choices, and I suspect the DH will want to go high-tech.

And just in case you are worried, it is a little 6 bottle wine cooler, so I can't go nuts. No 1000 egg hatches here.

We just got our chicks in today and wanted to share.

and on the topic of wine cooler fridges, I have one that I am supposed to pick up for free...but I already have a decent one and I live in Casa Grande so its hard for me to get to the valley as often as I would like. I'd be happy to pass on the info to anyone who wants to build themselves a incubator. The wine cooler fridge doesnt work. I didnt ask what was wrong with it as I planned on making an incubator out of it and rendering it completely useless for its original intended purpose. FYI, I believe the cooler is in Cave Creek area. PM me if you want the contact info and I will pass it on.

I picked up most of the things I needed to build an incubator at home depot. I am building mine like Chrystal's. The one thing that was the most expensive was the temp control thing. The Repti temp 500R. I paid about 38 including shipping for it. I picked up some PC fans at radio shack and will be pulling apart AC Adapters to make a power source that can be plugged in. The light is a part I picked up at home depot for 1.50 and I got a premade cord that was $6. I need to get hubby to do some drilling but it seems like its going to be a easy put together job.

gckiddhouse ~ Thank you for the wonderful visit. It was fun. If you need anything don't hesitate to call or PM

Thanks for helping me name my little tweaked chick. Her name shall be "Kevin" from the movie UP because well she just keeps looking up. I really think she don't know which way is up LOL. I hope she makes it. Mark (hubby) is very fond of her and her little glitch.
