Somebody help me. There must be a cure for this madness. With only 4 Bourbon Red turkeys in my Porter batch, I decided that was not enough for a good sex ratio. So I ordered some Bourbon Red hatching eggs off Ebay. Not one batch, but two! Two different sellers, whose birds came from 2 different places. Both live in the southern part of the U.S. so hopefully these poults will be more acclimated to our heat. Yikes! That is 22 eggs. If most of them hatch, I will have extra Bourbon Red poults. The eggs should be here by Friday or Saturday. Then I will have to camp out by the gate so if the mailperson comes, the boxes won't be sitting in the hot sun.


Here are my turkey poults. I had to split them into two bins today. I put the smaller ones in with the ones that just hatched a few days ago. Then I have 5 Royal Palms in an outside pen that I let a broody hen hatch. I think there are 33 counting all of them. Some of them I hatched but 24 came from Porter Turkeys. Greetings from Payson! Sorry if this a repeat question but there are WAY TOO MANY pages to go thru... For those of you that raise chickens as dual purpose... How do you decide which ones you will eat? I'm culling two this weekend because they are MEAN!! One is a roosterwho has made me bleed twice and other is a hen who pecks at my other chickens.

You got yourself two good reasons already. More: I raise chickens to the breed standard, if they are not meeting my goals there, they are meat if males, sell as layers if females. That is my main cull, they don't match up to the breed standard. If I have a hen who is caught being an egg eater, she is history. Hens kept for layers who are not laying enough to earn their keep. There are always too many males if you are breeding chickens, only so many you can keep or need for a breeding program, so keep the best and butcher the rest. Same goes for the hens, actually.

I think my red is egg bound. It's been 4 days since she layed. She seems somewhat lethargic. No in and out of the coop though and no walking straight up like I've read bound chickens do. How do u know if she's bound? Today I've been putting her in a warm bath and into the coop. 15 minute sessions each 2 times and nada. She walks around and stuff. You can't see the egg from the vent. I can feel the egg and while she was in the water I slowly moved it around very gently and slightly, not to get it out but just too loosen things up. Don't know what else to do. I do t know if calling me is following the rules here but if u have advise my cell is 4802976651

Good luck, Greg... I don't have any advice.

One of my hens has been limping for 5 days... she hasn't gotten better (or worse) and I don't see anything visibly wrong with her foot. I mentioned it to Gallo and he brought up Merek's. Now I'm worried. I posted to Emergencies/Diseases and added a video of the limp. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was worried about that... Could it be to compensate for being off balance? She kinda hangs the other one, too.

If she hangs the other one, that just usually means they are warm.

Could she have jumped off of a high roost and injured the leg?
