Arizona Chickens

Fear and its author have gotten the best of me tonight. I came home and checked my six babies for pasty but and saw some! I said a little prayer that if I needed to clean their bottoms they would come out of the dog carrier where Momma hen was so I could catch them. Very soon they started coming out. I caught most of them. A few were clean, one had a string of poo that was still damp so it pulled off easily (baby black female), but one gal, (gold I think) had a good paste up as did one boy that I caught. First I caught gold and with a wet cloth tried to clean her. She made a big fuss and it was dried and caked and didn't come off easily. Momma hen even came out of the dog carrier all puffed up at one point...wait, that was when I had baby black who I was able to promptly return. So gold was peeping so I took her in the house to avoid Momma Hen having to hear her cry. It took a little bit to get her cleaned up. Poor thing shook and shook. I did get it done though and returned her to Momma hen. She crawled right under Momma Hen. The boy baby got repeat treatment, but him I found the vent faster and got it cleaned and put him back...leaving a little stuff on other feather. It was a very traumatizing experience and I am still very distressed. I don't know why I can't just relax and trust. I saw another boy start to poo and the poo didn't come out, but I didn't get him caught. Oh, how I hated taking them away from Momma Hen and distressing everyone so. When we first put Momma hen out we had her on paper shreads for bedding. I think eating a few shreads may be the cause. Anyhow, I am very distressed, I want the babies to be ok and I hate having to deal with this. It is scary...and I am not sure why.

On top of that, I have long wondered about mites and the like so Laree's story added fuel to my worries. The babies do seem happy and healthy, but I am definitly out of sorts. I can't even stand the `thought of doing the mite treatment Laree went through... I am over the top out of sorts over 2 pasty butts and worried that I have another I'll need to clean tomorrow. Seems so silly to be so out of sorts. I guess I am more attached that I realize.

Glad to have a place to share. Thanks all!

I put hot water bottles in with the quail chicks. I hope that keeps them happy. <sigh> we have a power box in our back yard so I am sure SRP will come knocking any moment since it's our box that blew up.

I didnt mean to cause you worry. I think of myself as being able to handle more "ick" than most, but everyone has their "thing". Mine are ticks, Palo verde beetles, monkeys, and clowns. Red mites was just a leeetle too close to ticks for my taste. I left the "bath box" in the coop. i think I have to re-dust them in a week once all the mite eggs hatch? I am looking at my chooks and they are preening preening preening preening .

Little new chick is happy and healthy this morning.

Since you guys are talking about mites, I just wanted to add something I read in another thread I think. Someone saw mites on the babies under their broody and was asking about dusting the chicks. Someone replied with, don't dust the chicks just take the broody and dust her really well all over then put her back with the chicks. She will dust the babies. I would have never thought of that so I thought I would share it. Sounds pretty smart to me.

Greetings fellow Zoni's

I am so happy to have found this forum.

Has anybody had problems with noisy chickens in the East Valley area.

I live in an HOA but there is nothing said about having chickens.

Mine started laying this week and they are very noisy from 6:30am - 8:30am and I only have 4 hens! I am talking about squawking non stop.

Will they quiet down when they get into a schedule or does that not happen????

Any tips or first hand knowledge would be most appreciated.

Chickens are pretty happy when they release that egg. They are going to keep singing.

Most chickens lay an egg once every 26ish hours, so what may be 6-8 am now will be 3-5 pm in a few weeks. If it is dark when they need to lay, they will wait until the next morning. They will just keep cycling when they lay over and over.

My record as the egg serial killer still stands. 80ish eggs, 1 chick. Did eggtopsies--of the 28 at lockdown:
1 hatched. Healthy as all heck.
1 hatched with superbroody. died.
1 pipped and died
3-4 pipped in shell and quit
7ish never pipped the air sack
4 were dark eggs, died earlier.
All others died around lockdown.

ON a more pleasant note: I went to Western ranchman, and the lovely lady there gave me a chick that was an Easter dumpee. Looks rooey to me--what do you think? In the pick is Mohawk- FunnyHat's chick from Patch
