Arizona Chickens

Well, I'm sure glad I'm not in dire need of the feed from the co-op! The second truck has been delayed and last I heard, there is no contact with the driver and they have no idea when it'll arrive. This storm is causing a lot of problems for everyone West of the Mississippi. It's absolutely beautiful weather here in North Peoria, but we're going up to Dewey for a Christmas party tonight. It's supposed to be 19* with a 90% chance of snow by the time the part is underway. Yup, perfect weather for a party!

Be safe all!

I have a question along the same lines. My 4 chicks are just barely 11 weeks old but I have had them in the coop since 5 weeks old. I am cleaning what seems like a TON of feathers from coop and run daily. Some down loss, but also lots of regular feathers too. They seem to be a bit bare only in the chest area. Can they molt at that age? I assumed that was happening but some say they don't molt that young. Are they just losing other feathers with their down to fully feather out? I feed fermented and my girls are fat, sassy, healthy and happy despite the disturbingly mass of feathers I am sifting every day through my sand bedding. Thoughts?
Humm I have not read the posts below but I want to say that molting is stimulated by a change in the weather. For the most part it is the result of the body getting ready for the cold weather. Broken and abused feathers are replaced. Anyway as long as I have been raising chickens (my first flock was in 1990's) I have seen feathers everywhere, sort of like dog and cat hairs on sweaters and in the car etc.

Timskins from where are you planning on ordering chicks ?

I havent decided yet. If your interested I'm all ears. I did notice most places are a month or so out and as long as my grower feed comes in from the co-op I want to order sooner than that.
I'm interested in processed birds but I just noticed that we are on opposite ends of the Valley. :(
I work nights in downtown Phoenix and the feed pickup is at 40th st and Indian School every other month. I'm sure we could make something work.

I know there have been other posts but I am asking because my ladies are still really girls. I have 6 chicks, all of them are less than two months old, and four are about 2 weeks. I just got a small coup and I wanted to know if I need to heat it or if they will be ok inside without the heat? I can close the doors and the vent at night which should let them stay pretty warm. Its gana be a little drafty as it was put together by someone else and they did an ok job or the kit was a bit skewy.

I am in Phoenix and we have been in the 40s overnight and it’s going to get colder in the next two months.

Thanks.

Those 2 week olds definitely need heat & the others will too for a few more week.

ill post a pic tomorow of the coop, my fear is there is not a lot of room in there for the heat lamp.  How wories should I be about a fire and or fried baby chickens?

I have a small brooder & use a 250 watt bulb mounted at the top ( about 2 ft from the floor). The chicks sit just outside its hottest spot. Its always warm in that spot but not hot enough to cause fire. You can get lower wattages to lower fire risk.
