Arizona Chickens

Here are my 15 at about 2 weeks of age. I bought the white/brown/rare assortments from Meyer (along with a splash maran, copper maran, and a blue ameracauna males but I also had 3 deaths in the first couple days and wasn't sure of what breeds passed) and have some ideas as to what some of the breeds are.




? This one has darker legs than the other ones pictured above or below.

The 3 in the top pic look like RIRs to me.
The one on the left in the middle pic looks like a Welsummer
The bottom pic looks like maybe a Silver Laced something, no head poof or furry legs so I'd guess Wyandotte though I've never personally had a laced chick but that looks like what the coloring on the feathers is coming in as.

pollo dicso et all I ordered HOPS Rizomes to arrive in April. When I mentioned it to my son, he asked me if I planned on making home brew. He and his buddies have invested in the needed equipment. My answer to him is, "first let me see if I can get the hops to grow." I've seen wild hops growing in a box canyon in the National Forest sour of here so it shouldn't be impossible but we'll see.

gallo I enjoyed that photos of your spring buds. So nice to see the variety of plants that you grow. I started Elderberry, Black Raspberry, Blueberry Mullberry bushes and vines and they are coming alive again after the winter except for one blueberry bush. I'd plant fruit trees but not unless they were ten years old and put in by a nursery which we do not have around here.

Oh, I can't wait to hear how all of these plants perform for you. I had no idea there were wild hops here in AZ, I had to go google it! I see that people down south-east of us (at a bit higher elevation) are growing hops. I have friends growing them in CO and they are amazing plants. They have them on a wire that extends from the base of the plant to the top of their two story house; the collection of plants is very striking. I wonder if it's too hot here at my lower elevation? I've never heard of a Blueberry Mulberry either, that sounds delicious. I tried growing blackberries once, but it was a dismal failure. I seem to remember talking to someone from the AZ thread that had great success growing them down here in Tucson, maybe desertmarcy or pimachickens, and I think I didn't have the right variety. I'd like to try them again. It's such an exciting time of year. With the mild winter we had down here I really wondered if we'd get enough chill hours for some of the trees, but everything that should be blooming is. Well, the Fuji apple is still dormant and it hasn't bloomed yet in two previous years, so I'm not too hopeful for that.

What a great area... Looks like a orange tree by the walk way?
YES to Tempe feed and tack.. They are awesome.. When we did our first hatch they posted up chicks for sale.. I think I only asked $2.
But really gave most of them away..

It's a "dwarf" tangerine but it sure got bigger than I thought it would!

Gallo: I've got a blackberry that seems to be doing pretty well. I started it from a runner that I got from a neighbor, who in turn got a start from his father-in-law. And his father-in-law brought some blackberry bushes with him when he moved here from Missouri in the 1920's, so this variety has been grown with success in Arizona for almost a century. If you want a cutting I'd be glad to let you have one.

In other news, this weekend my husband planted a thornless lime, a Meyer lemon and a Navel orange (all dwarfs) on the side of our house, so now our urban orchard is complete We've been adding a few trees every year since we moved into this house five years ago, so its exciting to be finished with this part of the project. When all of the trees and bushes are mature, we should have some kind of fresh fruit almost year round.

I got my chicks ordered, after much debate I decided to get the brown egg layer assortment from Meyer Hatchery. I'm only going to keep about six of the chicks, so if anyone is looking for chicks in June let me know.

Oh my gosh, chicks, chicks everywhere

. I have to keep repeating my mantra over and over to myself "I do not need any chickens. Chicks grow up." "I do not need any chickens. Chicks grow up......." They are soo cute though

.

I love seeing that so many other people here grow lots of fruit. My aunt taught me that if we are going to waste the water here to water something we better be able to eat it.I always remember her advise. I will have to look into getting a blackberry bush. And I'd really like to get some fig trees. We have some peach trees, apple, lots of different citrus. I planted a blood orange one but I forgot which one it is. They should give fruit this year so I'll be able to see. 3 pecan trees. There was a pistachio tree grafted to be male and female but the poor thing died, I think I killed it

. I'm not sure what went wrong. I am going to plant my first garden this year though and am very excited.

I brought back some eggs from Flower. I have 3 blue eggs peeping and rocking..... May be new life soon. Maybe others not sure. It is really a day early. Hatching is when hatching is...... A lot can still happen between the pep, the Rock, and the zip so. Angle is figuring it out and getting it done.
