Arizona Chickens

What interesting timing on the bee talk, I was going to ask about this just last week. I was wondering if there was anyone in the near area that wouldn't mind the occasional tag along. I'm trying to learn about bee keeping and the only thing I've found local so far is the monthly meeting in Phoenix, at that rate it would be years before I knew enough to keep any bees.I'm in mesa and because of my unpredictable work schedule the closer the better. Any takers?

I am by no means an expert, having just started my hive, but you're more than welcome to tag along any time. I'm up Northwest of Arrowhead Towne Center, though, so it's a drive for you. Sunday night, I should be going back out to Tempe to try and fix the mess that a friend's neighbor got herself into. She took my hives that I thought I wasn't going to need, and decided to set it up. A swarm quickly occuppied the empty hive. Except she had no idea what she was doing and did it completely wrong. It's sitting on a small, decorative table that is sinking in to the dirt, there is no bottom board, no queen excluded, six supers are stacked up and she has no interior top cover. The supers are not stacked correctly, either. I opted not to move it tonight because she already has a ****** off neighbor. I think we need to relocate them off the property.

Anybody in the East Valley want a hive? Just briefly looking, they seem very productive. They were very agitated, but with a screwed up hive like that, I don't blame them. They did not act Africanized, though.

I'm going to try to get ahold of a guy in Scottsdale that rescues hives and have him help. I'm a bit out of my league on this one, but I hate the thought of them being killed off by all these exterminators.

I hope that we can find someone to relocate them. We do need to quiet that neighbor of theirs.. Thank you for coming out so quick.. They said the guy did not come out yesterday.. I have found that communication is key.. Agh, so frustrating.. I still can not believe they set it up the way they dd! Glad we did not have any rain in Tempe, it would of fell over for sure..
Since you mentioned your hives that you thought you were not going to need. Do you want them back if they are relocated?
What time are you comming out Sunday ?

IT'S CHICK DAY! (finally!)
Got a text message from the USPS this AM to come pick up my chicks. Got 15 pullets and 3 cockerel Black Jersey Giants (supposedly, anyway). there is one I don't think is going to make it, but the others are doing fine. After I put them in the brooder and introduced them to the waterer, they figured out they now have room, and are scurrying around like little black rats. I guess I really need to get busy finishing the run and the coop!

How eggciting!! Any photos

Hi, I live in Scottsdale and have chickens. Be sure to get a hearty bred that can take the heat. I have Golden Sex Links. They do well in the heat just be sure they have access to shade and lots of cool water. I also through a frozen water bottle into the coop sometimes but mostly they will find a shady spot and dig a little hole to lie in. Golden Sex Links are also regular layers and you can expect just about an egg a day from each girl. Happy chickening!!

So glad that you joined in.... :welcome

Thanks for the replies of concern.  I'm ok now, recovering after a year of cancer treatment.  I'm not suppose to go into the coop because of the dust, etc.  And what they don't tell you at the start of treatment is that the chronic fatigue could last years.

All that aside, I got up the gumption this morning armed with sharp knives, plastic bags, etc.  I "tried" to do the humane method of holding it in your lap and cutting the jugular.  I cried & cried all the way thru it.  because once you start you can't stop.  I think that was the main reason I didn't want to even try.  Even though I took it to the other side of the house outside of the view of the coop, the other one started screaming bloody murder just as I was cutting.  How terrible is that?!  And now, she won't come out of the coop and I'm not going in after her.  Well, I don't think it was humanely done, when I thought it was all the way dead and then tried to break it's neck off it cried out.  Dear God, I pray I don't come back as a chicken in the next life.

Oh boy girl, so sorry you had to go through that..we are praying for you...

These will have to do until I take some more pics and download them from my camera. My phone pics are TERRIBLE!:p

New to Tucson. Had chickens in Oregon, but left them behind with the new owners. (Chickens are hot in Portland!) Our new home came with a large coop that's well fortified, but no chickens. So sad. My previous flock were lap chickens and I miss them!
If anyone needs to rehome some laying hens, please let me know. Thanks!

I am glad to see more chicken friends in Tucson. I dont currently have anything available but I am going to work with Aloha and I might have some of her chickens that she culls in Aug or Sept. I can keep you posted. :)

I am in Peoria, it is over 45 minutes from Chandler (first Phoenix city) to me. I need to re home every one. Black China, a Silkie, and Mary, a Buff Orpington are spoken for. I have posted picks a few days ago. The only one that will be hard for me I'd Lucy, RIR, she is a little over two. She knows her name and the word "out". She wants to check out the dog dish, so will try to get in if she can. All are good layers.

Rosa, has possibility of becoming a lap chicken even at her age (almost a year) I have not had time in the last 7 months to be with them as I would have liked.

I have 4 chicks that hatched the day my mother died, March 13. I will be keeping 2 of them. The roster was a Marrans. The 3 are from blue eggs and 1 from a chocolate brown egg. I have a new hatch to day. Do not know how many there will be, but right now 4, 2 are Naked Necks. I will be keeping them. But the rest have to go. I need all chickens (except the ones I am keeping) re-homed by May 14. I am hoping between the 7th and 14. I will miss them.

If anyone is interested please let me know, ASAP.

this was taken about 7 PM. I will check again to night before I go to bed. 1 yellow and 1 gray are the NN. There is a good chance the Late Angle was the rooster. If one or both are pullets and the eggs are a shad darker then the odds are very good.
i will be in phx next weekend and i am willing to take chicks especially marrans and colored egg layers or NN. I love them all. Just let me know
