Arizona Chickens

you should go check out all my new duckling pics and chicken pics at my FB page. https://www.facebook.com/PrickleyAcresFurbabies?ref_type=bookmark.
we got Muscovy and Miguel named them all after chip brand names so we have Dorito, Frito, Funyuns, Cheeto, Tostito, Takis and I think the other one is Ruffles. lol. I love my son's imagination. I re homed 7 drakes to a guy that puts them in his horse pasture to keep the bugs down. I only had 3 females out of the original 14. :(. I am waiting to see what these Muscovy are and then I have 1 Welsh Harlequin and 2 younger white Muscovy in the brooder. ducks everywhere!!! lol
Nice facebood page. Love your NNs. Is it common for the NN roos not to crow??

I'm new to chicken keeping. I'm not sure I could do the cap on thing. Do you know of any place in Phoenix that would take in rooster? He seems very sweet and actually runs away from my older hens.
Maybe someone here could take him?

I have a question for you experienced chicken folks: I have one pullet, the one who was the most friendly, who is now running after me when I leave the pen or have my back turned while cleaning the pen and has pecked me on the back of the leg twice today. Not hard, didn't hurt, no broken skin. Any ideas why she is doing this? I shooed her away with the broom and she quit. I want to modify her behavior quickly so it doesn't escalate to "evil chicken" status.

She is also the smallest of the 4 and has not started to get the red on her comb and wattles are still small.
I have one hen that tends to police me when I'm near her flock and she will peck me hard on the hand if I'm doing something she doesn't like, but so far has not run after me or pecked behind me. When she gets too brave I'll either hold her down for a minute or two or "peck" her on her head or neck with my hand. So far that has worked to take her down a peg or two.

Yes it does work, not as good as shown in this video.. He started crowing about 1 month ago.. At the beginning it was not to bad, however we have new neighbors so we put it on just in case.. The new people are not as pet friendly as all of our other neighbors.. All of the other surrounding neighbors love his crow..

keep us posted on what you decide.. I have extra Velcro if anyone wants some.. If you want you can grab some at our next meet & greet BYC roasted marshmallow, potluck event I will post dates & times closer to the event.. October

Where do you put the collar on the neck for it to work best? In the middle?

are you saying you have an extra collar? And if not where would I buy one at?

(no crow roo collar)

...... Last problem I found in my ,"sealed, "organic chicken pellets that there is BUGSeverywhere in it even though it's sealed, how can this be???

All it takes is a couple of bug eggs to be in the feed..then they hatch. Some feed mills add DE to their feeds to keep the bug problem down. I have a couple of small doves that don't use much feed do so a bag will last them a very long time. I add a tablespoon of DE to each gallon of feed for them and their feed stays bug-free.

One of our chickens had a mystery band around her leg and when I removed it...

I have no idea how it got wrapped around her leg or where it came from, but I'm definitely not going to "open her". Geez.

Thanks to @moms3cuties ! I had a great visit with her a couple of days ago. Her Mesa yard is an urban jungle of edible plants and she sent me home with an armful or two of cuttings, fruit and seeds. Yum! It was also fun to see her chickens and turkey and how she has them set up to handle the heat of summer. I think my DH wanted to smuggle her turkey out of her yard, he really liked that bird. I can see a turkey now in our future.

That is too cool! How old was the hen when you got her?

That's the funny part. We've had her and her flockmates from when they were a day old! Lol!

They free range daily and she must have been scratching around somewhere and got this piece of plastic wrapped around her leg today.

Well, I candled my eggs tonight. Lockdown is tomorrow night. Had to remove 3 eggs; 2 quitters and a clear that I couldn't see well enough earlier, had put an "X" on them a week ago but wanted to wait a little longer to be sure before I tossed them. Fingers crossed on the remaining 10 (started with 15) I'm hopeful that I'll have some adorable little chickies in 2 or 3 days.

Good Morning!

I am SO nervous!  :bow  and  excited!  Tomorrow is Lockdown for my first time ever hatching experience.  I "think" there are 12 viable eggs out of the original 15 and am going to do one last candling tonight. :fl Please send me some good karma for a successful hatch.
I have Ameracaunas  and Black Copper Marans and Wheaton Marans and one Blue Laced Wyandotte.

Odds are, not ALL of them will be roos, right?  Oh, heck, I don't care if they are, I live out where I can have all the roos I want!  LOL

you can make Coq AU Vin...

What do I have? Got this one with couple of welsummers from CL, she is full grown but very small, lay white eggs, very fast, very flighty, very loud. The owner says she came from neighbor but I think it might be a wild bird bred with a chicken? Any ideas? Here is a picture, sorry for the quality, very hard to get a good picture when she is constantly moving.

1000

Barn yard mix, go out at night and get ahold of her.. Give her some loving..

She probably saw a bug on you, or something that looked like food.. Fuzz?? :idunno
Her wattles are small because of her breed.. The red means she is close to giving you a prize..
