Arizona Chickens

argh!

After work today, my car started slowing down.. all sorts of lights came on saying I needed service.

Drove it to my mechanic and it quit me right in the driveway. DS#3 had to take me home.

It will be done Tuesday. I need to get a different car. This one is WAY to expensive to maintain.

Hey Mahonri! One of the 1/1/10 hatch EE pullets laid this beauty this morning!! Yay!!

We have missed the green eggs!
Just waiting on the other (Marans), should be any day!
We have been watching the rooster take this EE into the hen house. He has been getting into the nest box and making a nest for her! Then he gets out and she gets in. It is so sweet and romantic.

hi, i introduced myself a little while back but have just been lurking recently. i live in north phoenix and met mahonri at the feed barn a few weeks ago(remember?). anyway, i was wondering when is the best time to order chicks in phoenix. i already have seven 2 month old hopefully pullets outside and am planning for my next attack. i already had to give away one roo and one sex link pullet that was pecking the crap out of my beautiful dark brahmas. are there certain times of the year that work best when you order them from a hatchery for this climate?

thank you,
noel

GC: Wow! That is a GREEN egg.

I candled the seven eggs that are under my broody today, and I think that I saw development in all seven. So fingers crossed, and maybe I'll get some chicks on the 12th or 13th. I also had to re-mark the eggs, as the pencil marks were wearing off. I was so impressed by the development that I wrote G-O-O-D-R-O-O, because well, that kind of fertility and development is pretty impressive.

A lot of hatcheries wont ship to us in the summer, so VERY soon would be good. Or you could let the feed stores know what you are looking for. Some of them still have a nice selection of chicks.

Personally, we have gotten chicks in early summer. We liked it because they were able to stay in the garage and the heat was just right for them as they need to be at 95 - 100*. By the time they were able to go out to the coop, it was starting to cool a bit. Then by fall, we had eggs. Worked nicely.

The thing that I really like , when you order from a feed store, you can order how ever many you want. You don't have to meet a minimum, like you do when you mail order.

Depending on what you are looking for, there may be someone here in Arizona that breeds them or has some new hatchlings that would be available. Sock Puppet has list of breeders and some of the active forum members often have chicks. There is also Craigs List.

GCK - good looking egg!

RRR - hope you feel better soon. You may want to try the antibiotic route to clear it up and then use cranberry and probiotics to ward of future infections. Just one possibility. Take care.

AZKat - nice to hear from you. How are your boys adjusting to their new brother?

Cheerful-They're adjusting really well. They both like him a lot, and are really helpful. Sometimes they're a little bit too helpful, but that happens. Today we went to the museum, and the library and got them signed up for the summer reading program. Thankfully the baby slept through most of the outing, which always makes things easier.

My husband is also doing pretty well, the physical therapists are predicting he'll be ready to go back to work by the 1st of July. He saw the doctor yesterday, and has developed more clots in his legs, so he's been having some pain there. I hope it doesn't slow his recovery, as he's already getting frustrated by how long its taking to get the strength back in his ankles and feet.

Ack! Sorry they are fighting. :C How is the boy in the cage?
Do you have a spare female? A pair would be happier but I don't think two males will live together though.

CL is your friend, I would post now with some photos of the males.
