Arizona Chickens

I was heading out for the evening early yesterday afternoon and when I went to lock up the free ranging chickens I heard a commotion from inside the chicken coop. There inside was a Cooper's hawk. A Cooper's in the coop surprised me, we commonly see them in the run but this bird went in through the shade cloth strips covering the pop door. I recently put a feeder in the coop for some new chickens that are not yet treadle feeder trained and the sparrows found it right away. The hawk must have had easy pickings once it found it's way inside, like shooting fish in a barrel. Up close these hawks are so much smaller than you'd think.

How many chickens did he get? Or did he just get sparrows?

And my gender-challenged Silkie-cross finally decided he is a HE. He cockadoodle-doo'ed this morning. Go Stan! Stand proud!

I'll be there, attempting to organize the Friday evening potluck during coop-in. For those who are planning to bring stuff, we could use some actual dinner type food

Probably won't have anything to show. Someone's loose dogs killed my best birds. There is one Black Java cockerel I might show if he grows back his sickle feathers in time. He would make everybody else's birds look really good.

I'm the teenager with brown and blond hair, and I always wear my camo Marana FFA sweater, also how do we sign up? I called and had a late entry last year.

I thought I had the entry forms but can't find them at the moment. The show is November 21-23. Usually the entry forms (and payment) have to be in at least 10-14 days ahead. I will post the forms if I can find them. If you are on Facebook you can look up the Tucson Poultry Pigeon and Fancy Fowl Club and pm Michelle (the page owner) for the November show info.
I am a cook, baker, and bottle washer extraordinaire... what kind of food would you like? I'm sure I can whip something up. Pizza rolls are a favorite at home, and they can feed a crowd! How many people come to the potluck on average?

Trust me, I know how that feels... two dogs, in the middle of our wide open desert, managed to find our barn, dig under the run, and kill every single bird we had. All we have now are laying hens and some roosters that snuck in. I miss my pretty sumatras...

We often find the little chicks stuck in the treadle feeder.. Since their mom is a silkie & "pretty" the jungle foul's weight just barly opens the lid. They jump in & eat inside the feeder.. We have F.F. Out plus scratch.. But no they want to get into trouble..

Speaking of F.F. Our duck's don't like it.. So you know what that means.. Special feed.. Spoiled brat's

Oh, what were your chicken's doing? They are okay right..
