Arizona Chickens

Congratulations on your first egg!  I remember how excited I was.  My chicken math has turned to rabbit math.  I have been trying my hand at a few different things in my back yard before choosing where I want to retire and decide what type of animals i want to have around me.  Everything I am doing is on a much smaller scale than many of you have.  I currently live in an HOA neighborhood. Our neighbor says when they hear mooing, they are calling the people with the white jackets.  We moved here 10 years ago from new york.  The neighbors want to know where their city neighbor went.  I told them she found her happy place :cd :bun

We are going to be so eggcited when our W.A. Lay's her first blue egg!! So far all of the close neighbors say how much they love the rooster.. I'm like, HUH? Again.. We have like 3 neighbors here that have had or have roosters.. We are right by A.S.U. We got rid of our other guy, cause he was so loud. The no crow collar did not work, this time it has worked.. Our hen duck, Lauren is loud sometimes.. We caught a new neighbor visiting from out of town trying to find where the duck sound was coming from.. It was so funny.. Plus we have the sign that say's. Wildlife habitat..

How's "BIG BOY?" do the girl's like him? Did you re-name him?

The Dude is finding out how to snatch and grab food, poor thing is so hen pecked. He's learned that I bring him special treats away from the girls, spoiled Dude.  I swear he's grown already though, and hackle feathers are getting longer.  Doing great with the collar so far.

Poor guy, he will show them someday very soon.. Hang in there, Big Boy!! :highfive:
He grew so fast, your a good Moma!! :cd

Not to bad, the duck's were happy.. They ate a ton of worms that came up from the ground.. If we had snails they would be even more happy..

I need to catch and bring you a bucket of snails.  They are rampant here.  What's gross is during the rain and subsequent damp nights the snails migrate to "greener pastures" and they can be found climbing into pots, up fences and walls or across the patio.  They crunch when you step on them.  I go out at night with a flashlight and hand pick them out of my veggies.

...I think I must have gotten something like 8 inches it seems or more, lol. My "White," leghorns look like a dirty buff color.

Sill and City farm... how was the rain by you two?

Lots of mud, some standing water.  I'm sure the fowl ate lots of earthworms as they were coming up everywhere to get out of the soggy ground.  I wormed everyone in December, probably moot since they are eating so many worms.

Oh yes please, the duck's would love the snails..:frow

Well I was staring into the incubator for like the fith time and I saw two of the eggs shake. ITSS ALLLIIIIIIIVVVEEEEEE! hahahah. OH man I keep walking in there to look.

LOL! On day 22 I walked into our "hatching room" to find my husband leaning over the incubator, his ear hovering just above the top and his face tense with concentration as he told me, "I think I hear them tapping." He was very disappointed when I informed him it was the fan in the incubator rattling, not chicks tapping. As funny as it was it was also very endearing as up to that point I thought I was the only one obsessing over those darn little eggs. I spent a lot of hours staring at those eggs, willing them to hatch, and terrified that they wouldn't.

Hey Guys,

Hope you're all having fun with your chickens.  I haven't posted in a while because (primarily) it's impossible to keep up with you all!

I have been researching Seramas and am considering hatching out some if I can find some good quality eggs. I've never hatched out anything so it will be a learning experience for me and my daughter.   I'm wondering, if I manage do succeed, would anyone here be interested in adopting some pet quality mini chicks?  I hear they make great indoor pets!

Let me know if you have any interest. I can't keep boys and I'd probably only keep one girl but I'll try to hatch a dozen.

Would love to discuss with anyone here who already has Seramas!

I've got two Seramas and I'd love to have any that you hatch out! They do make great house pets, my little rooster sits on my head and watches TV with me lol

Diaper? :gig

Nope lol he hasn't pooped on me or on anything in the house, hopeful he never does!

I met a young man a few weeks ago who had a Polish rooster that would use the doggy door to go outside and relieve himself before re-entering the house to hang out. He said the bird just did it without ever being trained to do so. I guess it learned from watching the dogs?

NO WAY!!

Yes, but can a coyote dig to get to them?
No, you can't really see it in the pics, but there is a 3 foot welded wire "apron" tied all along the bottom of the fence. It is also in the middle of the yard, at least 50 feet away from any of the perimeter fencing, and my 3 dogs do a pretty good job of patrolling the perimeter. They have trails worn in the weeds!
