Arizona Chickens

Umm yeah I noticed.. Last night I lost a chick (Pretty sure she was sick) so now I'm down to 5. My smallest chick is starting to worry me though because she's sleeping a lot like the other one was. Do you think I should contact the TSC that I got them from to see if they'll replace any that don't make it? I'm hoping that nobody else passes though! Fingers crossed!
Can they get sick from each other? Or is there just something that can happen that causes them to die? They are only 4 days old. Also they can't get sick from me can they? I'm getting over a cold.
So sorry about the chick - sometimes it just happens and you don't know why. Watch their little bums for pasty butt - this could happen when they are as young as yours. Calling TSC will only get you a yes or a no. Take the chance. Chickens can pass disease to each other but I don't think that's the problem - I think this one that died was just weaker maybe. Keep on taking care of the ones you have now.

Alright, thanks. I guess I'll give them a call after lunch. I have been keeping an eye on their toosh though. And if they start to get crusty on the bum warm water and a napkin should get rid of it right? So they can get sick from each other but not from me? Because right now I'm just worried that I'm gonna get them sick.

Get some vitamins into them, and maybe do a corid treatment

sometimes the stress of shipping culls the weak. Organic Apple cider vinegar helps prevent pasty butt. Search the threads for better details. Tablespoon per gallon of water. Sorry for your loss. Learning here gives you some advantage but anyone can lose a chick. Arm yourself with knowledge. As in any endeavor education is the advantage. I preach sorry.

Alright. Will do.

I was thinking that. They came from Tractor Supply which means they were shipped there and then I went and bought them in the same day.. That is a lot of stress.

I picked up 4 naked neck pullets from a guy in Phoenix yesterday, (they were a package deal for a great price) and I only want to keep one of them. They are about 7 months old. He says that they are laying (Only had them 1 night, cannot verify yet) I want to sell 3 if anyone is interested. I will be going out to Thatcher on Saturday and Phoenix on March 11 (early morning) if anyone wants any of them.

Fair warning- I got them because he let them sleep in a nesting box and they cause eggs to be knocked out and eaten by everyone. I am retraining them now to NOT sleep in a nesting box. PM if you are interested.

Well decided to take the plunge and go for NPIP ordered the EXPENSIVE antigent and the syringes. One neighbor that wants to do it to is sharing the cost we can do up to one more in our group since it test up to 1000 birds I have just over 200 and they only have about 50 to 75  We are in kingman I have the forms to fill out too.
good luck and congrats

X2..

Love ACV.. Great advice..
Was the chicks breathing shallow? Sometimes you just never know.. You could make a separate area, hospital area for the one chick you think is getting sick.. I agree that if that chick is sleeping more than normal it will not get better.. By now your temperature in the brooder should be about 80.. Your at 3 week? Plus it is nice outside they can play in the dirt and sunbathe.. We made a screened in area for them.. That way they could spend more time outside in a secure area, Away from predators...keep us posted..

X2! The biggest problem at that age is pasty butt, and if you don't take care of it, they will die. Check each one for dried poop around their vent, and if it is present, clean with warm water.
