Arizona Chickens

@Sodell a little mud won't hurt anyone, but they do need a place to be able to stay dry if it rains. My run is muddy too, and then when the rains stop it dries out after a day or so. Same with the wood chips. As long as they have some shelter where they aren't getting their feathers soaked (especially at night to roost), I wouldn't worry about it. I cannot believe how much rain we've had recently! This is the wettest October I think I have ever seen, and I've been in the area for 25 years.

So did anyone besides me get rained out and flooded this weekend. Coops are full of mud already and expecting more rain tonight. What does everyone do. I let them free range when I’m home but now I’m back to work and their cooped up not sure. My two month old chicks have mud everywhere in their coop. Yeaterday I put dry dirt in and now it’s mud again! A little worried about them.

Straw in a thick layer, like 4 to 6 inches, would help. Lets water under but the beasts stay dry. They'll turn it over and fling it everywhere but its a great boredom buster.

Bags of composted mulch will also improve your soil and it'll soak up the water and your mud and puddles won't be so bad after it breaks down.

Good luck!

Comb pics! They are 5 weeks today.
