Arizona Chickens

Help it out? It can take a while.
Thanks, I'd thought about doing that, I saw a little wiggle last night, at least I think I did, could have been wishful thinking, I'll wait till later this afternoon and see if I hear any chirping.. the other two from the hatch are doing well, seems to be something with the # 3 egg to hatch with me, lol, my first group, I got a video of him hatching, wanted so bad to stick my hand in there and give assistance, but read where doing that could kill them, so didn't. He's doing fine as big as a cornish game hen now..lol. As sad as it will be to lose him/her, it will be God's call, He might have a reason the baby isn't suppose to be here.

Hens only since of the restrictions here.
I thought you moved to a big place???

Working retail is not what I ever wanted to do... but here I am
ugggg:oops:

:hmm question for you all, when ordering from a hatchery do you order eggs or chicks? which do you think is best?
how to decide....
Do you want to wait 21 days to meet your chicks?
Do you like the excitement of watching them hatch?
Do you want them female only? Can you deal with 50% roos?
Can you handle the heartache of infertile eggs? or a incubator failure? (we left a few eggs in for almost 30days hoping we got the dates wrong)
......I like hatching, I think the chicks are friendlier!!! Though I seem to have bad luck in the roo department... I get closer to 70% roos... which I can't keep.

Thank you for your response.. chicks are wonderful things as you get to watch them grow up, so far out of 9 fertile eggs, I've only gotten to watch one hatch.. all the others decide to when I am not around, like a midnight when I am sleeping lol.. I prefer to get mainly females, but I know either hatching out of my own flock or getting them from a hatchery I'm subject to more roo's than hens.. I might stick to going to a local source like a feed store..

Chicks usually seem to have a better chance with the post office than eggs do. It's joked that they like to play football with eggs in the back room. Air pockets get detached just from vibration and you have a batch of useless eggs. And they are harder to guarantee. Chicks at least have a chance and can handle vibrations and such better. I only order eggs when they are dirt cheap so I don't have to be mad about wasting my money. If I can I prefer ordering chicks, and only get hatching eggs if I can drive to go get them myself.

I usually wait two days, then I'll break open the fat end of the egg to see what's going on. If there is still life then you have to help because once the egg is cracked open they can dry out enough to get stuck to the shell on the inside and not be able to get out on their own. But I don't get them out all the way either, just open the shell enough that they can kick out on their own, then lay it back on it's side and let them get themselves out. If you take it any further than that you risk umbilical hernia or bleeding to death. They'll kick out of the shell then let the umbilical cord dry out first before going any further to prevent that naturally.

:hitThinking that we've lost number 3 out of the most recent hatch, set 5 to hatch, 2 were not fertile and so far only two have hatched. How do you know how long to wait before checking them? how do you check? They were suppose to start hatching yesterday, he's got a little under 1/2 open.

It's a lot of work for a chick to work it's way out of an egg. They take breaks to rest before continuing. Not all will hatch on the same day, and a batch can take up to 3 day's for all of them to hatch, just like under a mother hen.

@nicollee We only know of one couple over there that we are antiquated with, but they never come over this way. I think that they also might have left already to go visit her sister that lives over in California for Christmas. If you can't bring him over here, then let Jacob have him. He will probably have a better life there, as I only want a roo that has a clean naked neck.
