Arizona Chickens

Wow! Bad juju all around this weekend! :hit Must be the full moon...

You shouldn't need any styptic powder for wing clipping. If you've never done it before i can post pics to help. Alot of people say to only clip one wing, but that's never worked for me, I always end up going back the next night and clipping the other wing because they've been able to keep getting into trouble with one.
I definitely didn't need any - the wing clipping went off without a hitch. I wanted to have it on hand just in case since they're young and I didn't know if the feathers would still have a blood supply. But all went very smoothly.

I'm planning on dividing up breeding groups soon. I'm going for NN/EE, Alohas and buffs/wheatens, and mixed crosses maybe. But don't think I'll be hatching my own for awhile. Not until late spring at least. I'm debating ordering some chicks of the last breeds I want to add like maybe some broilers from Dunlap, and some Buckeyes or Sussex, and just let my hens go broody and hatch eggs for me this year.... not incubate any myself. I've got way too many chickens and need to be careful. Things went to crap this last Fall and buying feed for all the birds became a problem... It was a wake up call.

I'd like some eggs from some of your bigger NN girls if you'll have any in Spring. I need to add and subtract from the crew, the 3 black hens I have are all that's staying. I need bigger girls so we can breed for meat. Color isn't an issue, but size and naked neck cross is.

Well, I've already had to pen off my Aloha boy. He's taken to crowing all night and crow collars aren't working on him. The main coop is pretty open and seems to amplify him, so he went into a breeding pen with a smaller more enclosed coop so now the hubby isn't complaining anymore. He's got his two Aloha girls, my two "buff" Transylvania girls, my light blue wheaten/salmon, and a red partridge with a blue tail from last spring. So it'll be a batch of all buff/wheaten/partridge/Aloha and all NN's. And they're all a pretty decent size, too. :D:cool:

I've rehomed most of my fully feathered birds, now literally 95% of my whole flock is now some type of NN.

This is egg 3 from my last hatch, not sure what happened, he looks fully developed, hadn't absorbed the yolk yet, some of the blood vessels still attached to the shell, I am wondering if it's what's called shrink wrapped? the membrane was hard to get open.

We had our first loss this evening. My EE Candice escaped over the fence into the neighbor's yard, and their dog got her. She died in my arms a few minutes later. I'm glad she didn't suffer long. Poor thing. I feel terrible, and my kids are devastated. So tomorrow i'm picking up some styptic powder and it's Operation Wing Clipping for the remaining 8 ladies.
So sorry
I know it hurts,:he stay strong for the kids, and protect the rest for the future..... :hugs

Sad sad day. My son found feathers all over the pasture and we can’t find Ferb. Not sure when or how but she is gone....:hit
NOOOOOOOO , sad sad sad......
Hugz.
Another sad note our female chihuahua was found in the pool dead today. She was 10 and blind. Must have fell in and couldn’t get out.
Oh my gosh... tell stories about your four legged friend and hold the memories tightly like a blanket

Perhaps a picture of Cora will cheer everyone up a bit :D She is getting so big! Two months old next week.

If you don't have styptic powder, cornstarch or even flour in a pinch will stem the blood flow. The big difference is that cornstarch or flour does not have any anticeptic ability
