Arizona Chickens

Welcome
Hello, fellow Chicken lovers!
My name is Iris and I'm in Kingman!
I started reading this thread and saw about Golden Valley, and about panicked until I saw the retraction! Whew!

You can look at my intro post here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/new-old-chickie-nana-from-kingman-az.1307727/#post-21313177

Other than that, just ask me here, or take me out for coffee/iced tea, I'm pretty easy going and don't really have a lot of friends (when we moved here a few years ago, my son went to MCC and so all I've had around were 20-somethings, never got to know other people my age or interested in the things *I'm* interested in... My own fault for staying to myself I guess...)

Also, if any of you have a goat or two and need a yard for it to munch on, our weed eater seems to have died halfway through our yard cleanup process.... :( It's *really* tall, I'm afraid to let the chicks out during the day, afraid I'd lose them in the jungle that is the other half of the yard!

P.S. - I forgot to share my happiness! Tonight after hubby went to bed, the one I think is a roo (*See below) jumped up on the side of the box (I hadn't covered them for the night yet) and ended up on my chest as I watched TV (which is rare in itself!) and just huddled down and let me pet him and his eyes rolled back, and he passed out asleep, but he even fell over sideways, legs kinda out to the side, like a tiny dog on my chest! It was SOOO freaking cute!! Then something loud happened on the show, and he woke up, so I put him back with his sisters.

*I called them "Our Sisters of Perpetual Poultry" until we kinda got an inkling that one was a boy... but medieval monks were also known as Friars, so now he's "Fryer Tuck!" I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna want to eat him when he gets big enough, he's probably going to get an anti-crow collar so I don't have to quiet him down the other way...
Welcome! :frow
Also... what about Fryer Cluck!?!?! :D

Hello! I'm glad that you found your way here to our states thread! What breed of chicken's do you have? One of my next door neighbor's has a job that has him working up in Kingman quite often.

Welcome @NanaOfZanitas I'm in the middle of the state near Casa Grande and Eloy. I've been keeping chickies forever! Right now I have about 30 of which a fair number are naked necked eye candy. Great layers and they can tolerate the heat! I'm caregiver for my handicapped DH so we don't get far in general. Enjoy your day Iris! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Well, I take care of hubby who has epilepsy, he takes care of me as I get older! LOL
We have a pretty good age difference, but we share similar ideals and values, so it works. Right now the torn rotator cuff keeps me from reaching for things, so he's kinda my gopher. :p

Our problem is that we live on his SSI, and we never get a chance to save. :(
Hubby and I would really like to homestead a bit further east (Flagstaff, Prescott, north of Winslow...) where the temps aren't *quite* so hot, because he misses trees and I miss grass. 10 yrs here from *rural* Washington State and we're still not as acclimated as we'd hoped. Seattle was 'creeping' down into our lovely areas, so when offered the chance to move here... Plus, I'm allergic to mould, which was becoming an annual trip to the ER with Pneumonia, so Arid was a nice change.

Thanks, nice meeting you!

I *think* I have Americaunas, but I'm going to take pics later when I get back from home depot and post them. I have three that look very much the same, color-wise, one who's a significantly different coloring. One of the three seems quite obviously male (to me) while the off coloured one seems to also be female.

Where you at that Kingman is "up here?" :p

:hitI'm sorry to hear about your baby.. there might be a little rearranging of the pecking order, but with her being picked on, she was probably on the lower end..
Thank you, it’s always hard to lose a hen. And you’re right, she was on the bottom of the pecking order so hopefully it won’t change things up too much. Someone else may have to take her spot on the lower end but ironically the hen that used to bully her the worst was also on the bottom of the pecking order herself! So now that she has no one to bully perhaps it will be a little more peaceful. Who know with chickens, only time will tell!

Welcome @NanaOfZanitas :frow This is a great group here! We are happy you joined. I love the name Fryer Tuck lol. He sounds like a keeper. I’m all the way down in Tucson now, we just moved. Used to be closer to Picacho Peak in the mountains. My husband and I welcomed our first baby in October and since then he has really taken over the majority of chicken duties, and as a result has fallen in love with them. We have a flock of 9 hens, all different breeds. Hope to see you around here lots!

I grew up in West Seattle so know exactly what you're talking about. Growing gardens down here is definitely a challenge, but I'm adapting.. haha! I like that there is more life in the desert than it seems at first glance. And Kingman is a cool area, we used to have our falconry meets there every year, but they've been moving them around the state the last few years. Most of the cool places with trees are either really expensive or really isolated so it's difficult to find a good middle ground there. So I'm working on just growing my own. Some day when I'm old and just want to sit around with my iced tea (did I say some day?) I will have big trees in my yard to sit under..... :p:cool:

The pecking order is fluid, who's on the top today could be on the bottom tomorrow. Adding or subtracting someone always changes things. I've added one to mine, so it's changing up some, two of my oldest girls were into it the other day, to the point that my Roo got in the middle of them to break up the fight..lol.. I've got another 9 that will be joining the flock probably mid June, I want them to be as big as my smaller hens at least.. That way they can hold their own..lol.

Welcome in in Glendale and keep my small flock inside most of the time. I’m not sure I can have the chickens here and pretty sure I can’t have roosters for which I have 3. I have silkies and a splash austhrope (sp) and her daughter who is a mixed both I got from @BlueBaby
