Arizona Chickens

Sorry that you lost Biddy! :hugs How old was she? Didn't you say that you had moved in the city now? I think that cities get hotter than more open places. There's all of that pavements and street's and the building's are closer together so that can hamper good air flow.

I think that life will go on in the rest of your flock, and after a couple of day's, they will forget all about Biddy even being a member of it.
Thank you @BlueBaby :hugs She was almost two years old. We did move to the city, still in the desert on 3 acres but definitely closer to pavement and concrete than we were. At first I thought it must be the heat but my husband mentioned it hasn’t been too hot yet. I think maybe the transition from spring to summer is really hard on them though since they’re coming out of cooler weather and aren’t acclimated to the heat yet. I definitely think I will go with some naked necks next time I add to the flock, just because of our climate. It’s brutal in the summer.

In case anyone is interested, I have a couple of pullet's here that are just now starting to lay, and another one that should start laying this month. They are mixed breed, and didn't inherit the Naked neck's. I also have one White Naked Neck girl that should also start laying soon. I'll take $10.00 for each.

@SonoranChick Sorry about your Biddy girl. :hugs I have some old girls that I watch and wonder how they will do with the heat. My 5/6/7 year old girls - wow - sometimes I wonder. My 7 year old girl no longer has a red/red comb but it is red/blue but she acts healthy as can be - she's an Australorp. No longer lays eggs but still comes and talks to me when she has a complaint.
A candle is lit at our house for your Biddy. Run free Biddy girl in the land of good things to eat! :love

:hitI'm sorry to hear about your baby.. there might be a little rearranging of the pecking order, but with her being picked on, she was probably on the lower end..

Sir Poops a Lot has figured out the coop, went and checked tonight and he was up on the roost, on the 3rd rung down all by his lonesome but since he's lowest on the totem pole, he's at least on it. :)

Hello, fellow Chicken lovers!
My name is Iris and I'm in Kingman!
I started reading this thread and saw about Golden Valley, and about panicked until I saw the retraction! Whew!

You can look at my intro post here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/new-old-chickie-nana-from-kingman-az.1307727/#post-21313177

Other than that, just ask me here, or take me out for coffee/iced tea, I'm pretty easy going and don't really have a lot of friends (when we moved here a few years ago, my son went to MCC and so all I've had around were 20-somethings, never got to know other people my age or interested in the things *I'm* interested in... My own fault for staying to myself I guess...)

Also, if any of you have a goat or two and need a yard for it to munch on, our weed eater seems to have died halfway through our yard cleanup process.... :( It's *really* tall, I'm afraid to let the chicks out during the day, afraid I'd lose them in the jungle that is the other half of the yard!

P.S. - I forgot to share my happiness! Tonight after hubby went to bed, the one I think is a roo (*See below) jumped up on the side of the box (I hadn't covered them for the night yet) and ended up on my chest as I watched TV (which is rare in itself!) and just huddled down and let me pet him and his eyes rolled back, and he passed out asleep, but he even fell over sideways, legs kinda out to the side, like a tiny dog on my chest! It was SOOO freaking cute!! Then something loud happened on the show, and he woke up, so I put him back with his sisters.

*I called them "Our Sisters of Perpetual Poultry" until we kinda got an inkling that one was a boy... but medieval monks were also known as Friars, so now he's "Fryer Tuck!" I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna want to eat him when he gets big enough, he's probably going to get an anti-crow collar so I don't have to quiet him down the other way...

Welcome to this group.. :) Iris, I am Carmen.. member of the FB group, Golden Valley Living and also Mohave County Cluckers. I love the name of your roo, my first Roo was Billy Bob, I say was as he had to go to the great big run in the sky over attacking all the time, now I have a roo from my own hatching, he's Speed Racer as he had this racing stripe down his back when he was hatched. I've got another roo from one of my hatches that is named Sir Poops a Lot.. He earned that name from when he was in my hospital tote recovering from being attack by the flock of the lady who I had hatched him for, it's taken a month or so, but he's now a member of my flock. My flock is a bunch of mutt's, some I do not know the breed mix, others are sexlinks..

Welcome @NanaOfZanitas I'm in the middle of the state near Casa Grande and Eloy. I've been keeping chickies forever! Right now I have about 30 of which a fair number are naked necked eye candy. Great layers and they can tolerate the heat! I'm caregiver for my handicapped DH so we don't get far in general. Enjoy your day Iris! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
