Arizona Chickens

I got two duck eggs to hatch under one of my pullets that is broody. Am I correct that only the red one of these two eggs is viable? I've never hatched eggs before.

And a pic of mama Agatha. She's young (7 mos) but so sweet and determined. I have a brooder ready if she won't raise them once they hatch.

@cactusrota By looking at all of the feathers on that hen's neck, plus the neck feathering on that blue roo, I can tell that the off spring would also have too much neck feathering. I'm currently trying to get less of that in my flock.
Well ya, the hen is a pure Ameraucana, SOP, she's not NN. I got her from a friend that used to breed APA black Ameraucanas before she rehomed her flock. She carries both copies of the blue egg gene. The pea comb gene does affect the NN gene making them have less feathers with only one copy. But only about half the offspring would inherit a copy of the NN gene. Just thought I'd mention it. She would add more blue egg gene but would also add the Ameraucana cheek muffs and black feathering. I don't currently have any roosters that carry both copies of the NN gene. But am raising up some turkens from dunlap right now that do, just don't know which ones are roosters yet.

Maybe I should wait for one of those that you are raising up with the double NN gene, and see if you night end up with a rooster with less neck feathering that I can get from you? It would help me to add more gene diversity, since it wouldn't be related to mine that I got from you before. I would be able to breed him to Charley's daughter's.

Biddy my barnevelder has passed away :( She wasn’t looking too great the last few days and I found her today. I hope she didn’t suffer. The others all look fine and are acting like they usually do, still laying daily and all. I am really sad though, she was a sweet shy girl. She had the tendency to go broody so I’m glad she didn’t have to go through another long hot summer, but I’ll miss her. Do you think this will affect the pecking order? She was always at the bottom and was bullied quite a bit.

Sorry that you lost Biddy! :hugs How old was she? Didn't you say that you had moved in the city now? I think that cities get hotter than more open places. There's all of that pavements and street's and the building's are closer together so that can hamper good air flow.

I think that life will go on in the rest of your flock, and after a couple of day's, they will forget all about Biddy even being a member of it.
