Arizona Chickens

Good morning all, The tip about the pineapple is what I did, just give them a little, at first they looked at it like, what the heck are you giving us. I left some for them and they ate it. I didn't know that pineapple was citrus, where have I been?

I am glad to know that the feather pulling is part of growing up. My little Roo Mr. Peep has also started to peck (bite) me, just started doing that this week. His mother got killed when he was 3 days old, so I started holding him and carrying him around. He would run to me when calling him and poke out his chest for me to pick him up, then he got so he would get on my arm set down and let me carry him all around in and out of the run. Now when I try to pick him up, he bites me.

Whats up with that?

YEA! we had rain last night in Tonopah

Hello, we are from Hereford AZ.
As for the heat, plenty of water....

I use the hose, and mist em once in awhile. it's not a must.
We have a very large area shaded, and the love to dig holes and dust themselves- which also helps them cool off!

Yes it does have acid and is really sweet. I am glad that I only gave them a small amount. I think I worry about treats for them they are so spoiled. I can't wait for my first egg, Should be soon I hope.

I am afraid it is people just walking off and leaving animals to fend for themselves. So many people have lost their homes; about half the houses in my neighborhood are in repossession.

I feel for the animals, but I can't do much more than provide water.

Yeah I really feel like the stray animal problem in this part of Arizona is out of control. I think it is partly due to people just not able to care for them and there is no place to take them that is not already full. It is really sad. I guess I should not say too much about it though because I don't have a solution either. We have actually participated in the feral cat program though. The pound won't take them but they will spay or nueter (sp?) them and let you put them back. Our neighborhood is over run with people letting their cats breed and not caring for the kittens. I was feeding my cat outside just because some of the cats looked like they were on deaths door but then it became a problem for me personally. That's when we decided to use a live trap and have them fixed since the owner (that I will not mention the name of) will not do anything about this problem. As for the dogs, well it is sad but I learned my lesson years ago about having a "save the world" attitude if you know what I mean. You can't blame the dogs for wanting to eat if in fact that was the case and not just some dogs looking for some fun interactive toys to play with. I just thought it was odd that there would be two feed stores attacked within a week of each other.

I think the feed stores were just easy marks for the dogs. They close up the back of the store with chain link gates that look to be sort of a loose affair.

Any security devices would be inside the building. Motion detectors would be useless with all the live animals there.

We have had two dog attacks on our birds. We heard nothing. In both cases, my wife was careless about the gate. The telephone rang, and she was going to be gone for only a few minutes, she thought.

Ok, here's something I did just for fun and to show my family who lives back east. I took some video of my coops. Kindof a coop tour.
Then, I put it on youtube!

Here ya go.

I'm going on my first ever lockdown tonight!

It is day 18. 12 eggs in the bator.
Taking out the turner.
One last candling.
Crank up the humidity.
Sit on my hands.
Take out the incubator vent plugs.
Chicks can stay inside for up to 3 days.

Anything I'm missing that you see?

I'll try to update throughout the weekend.

Good luck and keep us posted! We've hatched twice in the bator before, it's so exciting! Our lastest are 6-7 days old today (they hatched over 2 days).

Sending good hatching vibes your way!!!!

Oh, and I liked your coop tour!

Thanks for the encouragement!
I did a last candling last night and I could see a bit of movement within some of the lighter shelled ones.
There's buff orpington, standard cochin, turken, white rock, and ameraucanas in there.
I really hope I get some turkens. They are so wild!
I did go back to the bator and check it like 5 times last night to see if any of them were rocking. Nothing yet. I'm at 99.9 degrees and about 73%R.H. so conditions are good.
Day 20 is tomorrow. I'll probably spend the whole day at the little window.

Well, he is in our run right now. He looked so healthy we put him in with the flock. The blue roo beat on him for about 20 seconds and then it was over.... now he's running away from the 5 big hens but is OK with the juvies who are a month younger.

He is BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
