Arizona Chickens

Was pointed to this thread in my self intro to the site... and just hit the watch button (just found it after my 4th day here 😅)... how’s everyone’s chicks/chickens doing in the heat today? I live down near the Huachuca mountains and it’s 86° out right now and I have all my 1-3 week old chicks out in the covered run (with me watching them)...
Welcome to the AZ thread. I'm un the valley and it's hot here. Not quite so bad now but earlier it was pretty toasty.

:hit :hit I've just had to put my little one with the legs that would not work to sleep.. broke my heart. But scooting around wasn't a life for a chicken. I'm still waiting on a bunch of eggs to hatch, 3 NN's, 3 Silkies and 6+ Americana. Today is the official hatch day. I used the baking soda method, it was quick. No suffering and I didn't have to see blood. It was warm here today, 81, but we had a wind so it wasn't all that bad.

Sorry that you had to do that. Sometime's thing's can go wrong in a hatch, like incorrect humidity or temp, or if you try to rush the chick out of the shell too fast before it is ready. I hope that you get that humidity in your incubator working properly.

@Tinman0ut Welcome to our state's thread! I hope that you are planning on making some type of ventilation for them in the trailer part that you are using for the coop. It will get mighty hot in there in the summer, and they will need that air from the ventilation.
The roof has a 12”x12” vent.
Ordered 3 of these that will be here in about 4 more days and the chicks still aren’t out there full time so I’ll be able to install them without interfering with them.:

I’ll have to do some modifications to the trailer itself but I wanted something that I could shut up come monsoon season and have it be water right. They should be able to let enough air in. I have a misting system with a dedicated hose to hook up in the run also. Been debating running power to the coop and giving them a swamp cooler also but think that might be over doing it 😅.

For some reason my hubby drew a line at me putting a/c in my coop..lol, but I did at least get misters.

I dunno. I just can't believe they'd dump all that food considering people are going to food banks regularly to be able to feed their families. I guess it's chickens in this case but people could still eat them. What a waste.
I've been thinking about the processing plants closed down due to sick workers etc, and the farmers with animals ready to process, but nowhere to process them. I think if our food were more local, at least regional, that'd eliminate much of the mess with our food supply. There wouldn't be such distance/anonymity between the food suppliers and the food buyers/eaters, and there'd be some accountability.

There's another place that is killing their pig's off now because of it also. I forget where I read it at.
