Arizona Chickens

I got no eggs today. I think y'all jinxed me. I only have 2 that lay. My silkie hen lays most days, so it's no big deal that she didn't lay today. But, my other hen has always been so reliable. She even layed the day after she survived the coyote attack! We have never dealt with a molt, either, but now I think she is. She looks so awful that I thought maybe she had those mites. I checked her close, and couldn't find a thing. There were lots of new feathers, though. Good thing. I think she is down to about 3 tail feathers. She isn't a pretty chicken anyway, but now she is pathetic! That's okay. I bought a dozen eggs at the Green Valley farmer's market last week to get us through. They still had a BUNCH of eggs, so at least somebody is getting plenty.

Hey there everyone. I get the chance to read a bit and have been trying to keep up with everything, but I dont always do well.

I am still not sure what to think about the whole cayenne pepper to induce egg laying idea. I gave it to my girls for a month after the 12 hens went down to about 2 to 3 eggs a day and saw no changes at all. About 2 days after I ran out of cayenne and had not yet picked up more, they started to increase the production rate again. For the last week I have been up to an average of 6 to 7 eggs a day and these are young birds. I may still have a couple of girls that are not be laying yet.

On a different note, I have my first batch of eggs in the incubator. I have 2 dozen silkie eggs I bought from cjexotic, a dozen buff opringtons I bought off of ebay, 6 quail and one random mix egg from my girls ( I think it is a barred rock x speckled sussex ).

I'm anxious to see your Silkie hatch. I locked down my incubator today. I'm really hoping I get some of Mahonri blue wheatens to hatch. I didn't get any hatchers last time so I'm hoping this is the magical hatch. I will be setting some Silkies on the 11th. I have a pair I'm really fond of and she is laying finally.

LareePQG Thanks. I got $4 worth of Martha Stuart paint (I donno, a dozen or so colors) from Home Depot and thought I'd have some fun.

NoSkivvies, LOL! I'll paint on a calm day!

Still waiting for my wire. Someone did call me about it, but not in yet. *sigh.*

Anybody have an idea where Marek's vaccines can be purchased locally? I think my new hatches are coming down with it, and need to vaccinate everyone pronto. Thanks in advance.

I order mine from Jeffer's Poultry. I know of no one that carries it locally.

Sommer and I talked to the feed store on 67th and Van buren (? I know that is not right) and they said they would start stocking it again if there was enough people interested in them.
