Arizona Chickens

Like the sound of wood ash ❤️

I have a Mexican elderberry planted and wondering how long it took you to get fruit? This is its second year and only flowers, no fruit so far.
I hadn't thought to offer cuttings, but if anyone wants elderberry, mulberry, duckweed etc...I have plenty to share. I have a wide variety of pond plants and desert hardy plants that grow well from cuttings or division. Seems like everything under the sun loves to eat duckweed.
You should get fruit by the 2nd year. Birds 🐦 are the 1st to get them. Or you don't have enough bees to pollinate them.

Please do remind us here when you get the locations up on your website. In the meantime, perhaps we'll plan a weekend RV trip to Tucson end of September. Where in Tucson, roughly, will the exchange be? Is the date established yet?
Nothing on a date yet. We do have one in the Phoenix area May 13th. We have over 125 accros the state of Arizona. The global map is on the website. Hope you can make it to one of our plant n seed exchange.

I would love some duckweed for my fish tanks and wading pool for my ducks and then the elderberry cuttings, I just need education on how to start them so I can get them growing like weeds for my chickens. Tucson is only an hour away for me in Sierra Vista

I have space in my aero garden...can start a cutting for you. I've never started elderberry so I'll throw a few in and cross my fingers. Should work though...I've started everything from cottonwood to roses in it.
Let me know when you'll be in the area and can figure out a time that works for both of us.

Okay! I know I’ll be up in Tucson on the 18th because I have to go see my rheumatologist but if you’re working the times might be all out of sorts for us haha.

So I have to ask y’all. Do you ever have those days where you just could NOT sleep because of the pain you were in physically and groaned at the thought of getting up and making sure your chickens were let out the coop?

I had my first day like that today and I hate it. I don’t ever let my physical dis-abilities stop me from doing the things I love, but dang did my body just want to hurt all night long so when I finally got comfortable and could sleep it was only for an hour before my alarm went off that said it was chicken time.

luckily I have an appointment with my rheumatologist soon so I can talk to her (though she never listens) about maybe something for the pain so I won’t be slowed down again. I know one bad day doesn’t mean much but it worries me that my RA is progressing again and I’ll start really slowing down. My chickens are the reason I get up in the morning and keep moving instead of just wallowing in misery and woe is me.

I know Chicken pop doors are somewhat pricey. The better ones at least. The entry level cheep ones, I have no experience with, so not sure there.
I have my pop door for the main purpose of letting chickens out when Dawn arrives. This way I do not need to be there at crack of dawn.
My pop door is light activated. It does close at dusk, but I always go there anyways, since some of my chickens do not go inside in timely manner. Actually, it is one of the larger chickens , that chases my banties out. :(
But when I place Bantie Sushi onto roost,,, all is well. Sushi is a Japanese bantam.

I may have to look into getting a pop door. This way if I do have slow days I know my babies can still get out and be free in their run with their food and water.

Great idea! Never would have thought of that. We frequently burn yard/tree debris. Now I know what I can do with some of that ash.

We just planted 3 Arabian lilac on the south side of our run a couple months ago. They were specifically recommended (by Jackrabbit Nursery) as appropriate for being around chickens. Can't wait to see the plants grow as fast as I've heard they grow.

That's generous of you. What part of AZ are you in?
I am glad you knew wood ASH.. not ask, phat fingers, tehe
