mmmmm We bought them from Cal Ranch and with their information on the breed their broodiness was not often. So I guess the hatchery they got them from bred the broodiness out of them but they on average do 320 eggs a year.. Guessing they bred them to shove eggs out like crazy but not be broodyIt could be in how they were bred where they came from. Different people breed for different thing's.
That looks yummy!Anyone here growing strawberries and basil this year?

I think that the hatcheries do all of their hatching in those huge incubators, so they don't want a hen that is being broody and not laying those egg's.mmmmm We bought them from Cal Ranch and with their information on the breed their broodiness was not often. That does look yummy. I'm growing basil but gave up on strawberries. The wild birds eat them and everything I've tried to protect them catches snakes and lizards off and on. Detangling a five foot bull snake from the netting is no funAnyone here growing strawberries and basil this year?

I think so too. They also want to sell them as a more production hen then anything. I like my hens having a more natural cycle of laying eggs. So they want to take the winter off? Go for it! Enjoy your winter babies! It just meant that you had snakes to hand to your kids LOL !That does look yummy. I'm growing basil but gave up on strawberries. The wild birds eat them and everything I've tried to protect them catches snakes and lizards off and on. Detangling a five foot bull snake from the netting is no fun![]()
One year there was a rat snake crawling across my back yard, and there were a bunch of those greckles attacking it.It just meant that you had snakes to hand to your kids LOL !
Ugh I don't think I'll see any snakes at all. At my parents' house in Tombstone we never saw snakes cause my cats caught them and ate them. Out here I don't think i'll have snakes cause suddenly we have stray cats settling in... I don't like it but nothing I can do. The people all around us have cats and a lady down the road that has lived in this neighborhood for almost 50 years has cats that are outside inside cats. One year there was a rat snake crawling across my back yard, and there were a bunch of those greckles attacking it.
Most 4 legged critters are great about sent marking what they see as being their territory.Ugh I don't think I'll see any snakes at all. Gotta make sure our runs are completely enclosed to keep the cats out. tsk tsk tsk... I mean we were going to do it anyways but now it's a MUST. We caught a big old orange tom peeing all over our roses before going next door and peeing on their door! Cause they have inside cats.
