Arizona Chickens

He'd be too big for my tiny girl then. She could put up a pic and ad and I'm sure someone would be happy to get him ❤️ Craigslist or one of the goat Facebook pages
My husband and I have both been asking around to try to see Homer go to someone who might want him, but no success yet. My husband knew a guy that had some goats years ago, but he's not doing them anymore.

It's the heat. I don't have much of an appetite when I'm hot neither. If you are worried about them not eating the feed enough, make some wet feed. They will eat that plus it will get more water in them too to keep them hydrated.
That's what I have been doing. I keep a quart of cool water, mix electrolytes in it, and make wet feed. They eat it right up!

How often are electrolytes recommended? They love to eat the wet feed (preferring it to dry crumbles in the pail). I also have 2 chicken "pools" (terra cotta planter bottoms)with water and a frozen drink bottle added, and a makeshift a/c (small fan blowing on a frozen milk jug). It's funny to see the hens standing in front of the cool air blowing 😀

In the cooler months I have been giving the vitamins and electrolytes to mine once a week on Sundays. In the hotter months I up it to twice a week on Sunday's and Wednesdays. In between those days any wet feed I give them is just plain water with sometimes having other thing's mixed into it. Yesterday's had 6 scrambled egg's mixed in and some left over rice from the night before.

Been thinking about my fellow AZ chicken keepers here and hoping everyone is coping with this heat.

I check on my flock a few times per day but they seem to be doing ok. A couple times I've found a hen or two sunbathing!
Thing's are holding up OK over here I guess. I wish that the rain would come though. I hope the power doesn't go out on anyone. It would be very bad to not have any air-conditioning in this heat.

I stocked up on some ready to eat can goods for just in case of emergency. They are fully cooked and some can even be eaten out of the can, if the need arises. Or, they could be heated up outside on a grill or camp stove.

Amen! I bought a generator and keep extra propane for the grill. I bought a stock of emergency food, too.
I finally decided to fix an old dog crate bottom for a huge chicken "pool". The lip is perfect for perching. I will put water and ice blocks in to keep it cool. The girls have all figured out that will keep them cool. I covered the run with one of those 80% shade tarps. The Home Depot water bucket gets a block of ice added, and frequent spraying the run keeps me busy.
My favorite is the small battery operated quiet fan behind a frozen milk jug. It really keeps the vicinity cool, and is hilarious watching the hens get their feathers blown.
What we do for fresh eggs and our feathered dogs!

Yes, you have to do all that you can, and then hope for the best.
