Arizona Chickens

How long have you been in AZ? I know when I moved here as a broke college kid I felt that way a lot in the summer. I could beat the heat and moist swamp cooler by doing as much of my studies as I could at libraries and food courts. If you can get out and about in the summer it helps while your bodies learning to adjust to the heat. It took me years but I'm finally comfortable in AZ summer weather... you'll get there too!
About twenty years too long.

The real problem is the desert has ruined my lungs and eyes. Doctors keep telling me to move back to the coast. I'd like to know how to afford that... Also, one of the reasons I left home was because of the Northridge quake. I lived through a horrific experience I don't like to talk about. It was a nightmare and I never want to go through that again. I generally try to stay out of earthquake areas.

One of the things I like about living here is that it's geologically stable. I can go to sleep at night and be reasonably certain that the walls and ceiling will still be in the same place when I wake up!

Summer or winter, I need more humidity than the desert offers. All of my DNA comes from European coastlines. It just doesn't work in a desert.
California is outrageously expensive. Have you considered the east coast (southern)?

Finally finished our coop and got our ladies (and a couple gents) moved out of the temporary run. I think everyone is happy. Including this girl who likes to fall asleep in my arms.

Welcome to the AZ thread. Would love to see pics of your finished coop. How many chickens do you have?

I have 8 so far. Will most likely add more in the spring. We separated the inside of the building in order to have a bantam flock and a “big girl” flock. We live in the desert desert so we have had to do major predator proofing agains bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, snakes, hawks, Etc. I actually had a Cooper’s Hawk fly into the wall of our temporary run, which was just 3in horse fencing with shade cloth on top. So very happy to finally have our coop/run done.

I hope that nothing can get in there now to get them.
