Arizona Chickens

I am in Sedona ... it was recommended to me to get Rhode Island Reds as they are both cold and heat hardy, robust health, the rooster is good for guarding flock, and they are great egg layers ... we have not ordered our chickens yet, but that is definitely the breed we have chosen after research.

Oh my, what a evil one.. I can understand why you are ticked.. No darn way to treat it's owner.. Off to the dog food mill with him.. Did it scare the baby? My friend at church was just telling me some of her roosters are mean also. I'm very happy with ours..

Hi IceCat!
welcome-byc.gif
and welcome to our AZ thread. I don't have any experience with RIRs. Good luck with your chicken planning!

turkeybreeder, I'll bet that was a delicious omelet! Turkey eggs were always my favorite.

Yummm!

We started to see him jumping at us a few weeks ago and we've been watching him but this was the first time he did this. It was the one that shared the back wall with the ones you got. I think I scared the baby by screaming at him. She's not used to screaming like that. I'm just glad he didn't hurt her. Hes in a brooder box for safety until later. We let all the other roosters out to graze around and he was the lone one pacing the coop were we put his hens.

Welcome....

I am just west of you in Chino Valley. My Rhode Island Reds do great.....you should like them

Ok, time to play catch up. I am sure I will miss something and am sorry ahead of time.

First off, I am sorry about your dog DM. Congrats and good on you for giving her some good and happy years before losing her to such a horrid thing as Cancer.

Pastrymama - that definately sounds like a broody girl. My Jersey Giant does a pretty good job of telling me to off and attempting to remove my hand for me when I try to check what she may have. She had no eggs and I noticed a couple the other day. I caught her off the nest today and she has managed to let the other girls lay 7 eggs in her nest.

I think it may be time I put her in a crate and prevent her from getting more.

Noskiveez - I sure dont blame you for turning that guy into chow. Sounds like a much better use for him. Adorable babies.

Hey IceCat - Welcome aboard. I haven't done RIRs myself but a friend of mine has some and they lay great for her. Good luck.

Ok well kindof caught up and homework/ chores call.

Anyone want to run a Cuckoo Marans test hatch? I'm not sure my roo is doing what he should and I have bators running at capacity with quail. One of my hens is a new hen who was with a CM roo other than my roo. I have 5 days worth of eggs (almost 18 eggs). And if you hatch a roo, I will buy him from you. Please ley me know asap or I'm gonna craigslist them.
