Arizona Chickens

oh no. the extention cord to the chicks heat lamp got wet because i completely forgot it was uncovered. the light blew and there are pieces everywhere!! i cant see out there, cant find half of the pieces, keep slipping on mud and stepping on chicks. i just want to cry.
i already expect that i will be doing bumblefoot surgeries for the rest of my life now that there are shards everywhere. but do you think they will eat the pieces? they are red... their favorite food color.

Chicken fatality tonight.

Got home around 7:30 tonight from the in-laws like we do every Sunday and I went out to check on the hens. Our little bichon-poodle came out of their run area and I didn't really think anything about it since he's always snooping around back their sniffing their food. I looked in the coop and only counted eight. The four pullets had just been introduced to the coop this week so I just thought she decided to sleep somewhere else. I looked behind the coop and I could see a wet messy chicken. I just thought what a silly chicken or at worst one of the older girls bullied her out of the coop. I walked around the other side to get to her and put her in the coop when I discovered her back feathers were gone and I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like broken skin. I went and got my flashlight in the house and noticed the same dog was all muddy and bloody. I shined the flashlight on the hen and confirmed the worst. My wife wanted to see and she just started crying. I picked her up and put her out in the open under our flood lights and she just struggled and didn't have much energy. The wife completely lost it and I told her to go in the house. Then I had to do something that I just wasn't prepared to do. I've never had to cull a bird before and this was an egg-layer not a meat bird. She kicked and flapped her wings once or twice and it was over. I know it's the circle of life but I am so mad at that dog. Like I said I wasn't prepared to do that tonight or at all on that bird. It was one of our RIR but I couldn't tell which one (Ginger or Sweetie). So now we are down to eight total and Charlie the dog is grounded from the chickens.

If possible I'd relocate them where they can't get to the pieces. That totally stinks!

notinoz2007 and Billiam,

What a rough night for both of you. notinoz2007, I'd really try to get up every piece. Maybe collect up the chicks and put them into something overnight and in the morning shovel up the top layer of soil where the bulb pieces could be.

Thank you for all of the kind thoughts and prayers.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 AM at 36th and Shea.

Too young to die. The other officers will be doing a 15 minute tribute with bagpipes and all and no need to worry about a police escort to the cemetery, they have it covered.

Don't know if anyone heard or cares but Rosie on the house will be doing a segment or show dedicated to backyard poultry and the people who do it next Saturday. I like listening to the first hour because it's about plants and such so if he only does it for one segment hope fully it's the second one. I get a kick out of listening to that one also, full of bad advice usually and when he doesn't know he says call my friends at so and so....... Ya how much is that gonna cost? Any who 92.3 KTAR starting at 7 am.
