Arizona Chickens

Hey everyone. I've tried searching this thread for a previous post on breeders selling in/near Marana, but haven't had any luck. Does anyone know of one?

First, greetings to you! desertmarcy is in Marana and she has really nice birds available. I have a great bunch of chicks that originated from her right now.

I went crazy with ventilation. My dad visited us this winter and wanted to do some projects so the chicken coop was one of the results. He can build and took the ideas I had further. The two tier roof was his idea - it should give a place for the hot air to escape so it doesn't get trapped under the roof.

I used hardware cloth everywhere (under the coop as well). I was building for coyotes, neighborhood dogs that get in my yard, and LOTS of hawks/owls. I even saw a golden eagle sitting in our yard last week

I was hoping to keep it under $400, but I added the roof and used all hardware cloth b/c of the predators so I went over. The shades/awnings are because I had a little extra roofing and I didn't want to waste anything!

I left the side of the coop open (facing the run):

Sorry it's so dark. The roost is on the right, egg box on the right. There are two nipple waterers that feed into the coop and three below in the run.

I do not have covers for the windows, but I could build them if I need to

we went through a few good wind storms already and there are a few places they can escape it. Ill have to see how arizona winter weather goes.

Oh, you didn't go crazy with the ventilation at all; I think it's just about right. Unfortunately, the costs always seem to be higher than we originally estimate. In the long run, you will be very pleased that you spent a little extra on the hardware cloth. Be sure to tell your father that we think he made an excellent coop.

I will, thanks. I am glad we spent the extra. It should mean less bird loss and its easier to do it right from the beginning.

Has anybody seen the new small coops advertised on Craigslist? Super cute, but fully enclosed with a "run" underneath (although I think they intend the people who buy them to attach it to a larger run, but I can see them being used as the whole run). They are 3 ft by 4 ft and 3.5 ft high (with a pitched roof, which means the coop is about 1.5 ft high and the run is the same). It is advertised as being good for 6 chickens. It seemed small to me, but I don't have chicken experience yet, just what I read. What do you guys think?

I am in the nw valley, and am looking for a red, or partridge silkie roo with a straight comb. Obviously it will be crossbred so bigger the better. I will pay up to 10 dollars for said roo, and he will be very needed in my breeding pen. Don't laugh, my mutts are beautiful! Lol, he will be used to try and make a couple silkie alohas......oooooooooo I have just enough room for this silly project, and I thing orange mottled silkies with straight combs, would just be the deco my yard needs. Btw, please don't discourage me by telling me its going to take bazillions of gens to get what I want. I'm just playing with it on a hobby scale, and I need good Broodys so no matter what they look like that will be their job. Please pm me if you have a boy for me :)

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to mention that Tour De Coops is needing volunteers and there will be a meeting downtown (tomorrow night) if anyone is interested:

http://www.phoenixpermaculture.org/events/flock-to-make-a-difference

I'm helping a little . . . I'm already committed to other stuff so my involvement won't be huge, due to time constraints, but it's OK if you can help out a little bit. I like that they're planning kind of more of an "event" at the start of the tour. So it won't be just grab your maps and leave, they are talking about all kinds of other fun ideas at a sort of "home base" where folks can check it out and learn about chicken keeping and sustainable living in general.

They are also going to put a "shout out" for coops to include on the tour, so all of you with cute coops start thinking about that!

The cat in the hat turned out great. Your grandson is a handsome young man.I learned cake decorating when I worked at Baskin-Robbins many many years ago. I do like making cakes and cupcakes for occasions. I think if I had to do this as a real job, it wouldn't be as fun.

oh Mama Hen, i have to disagree!!!!!!!!! being a pastrychef is the best job EVER!!!!!!! except if you work in a huge resort and it's thanksgiving, christmas, easter, mothers' day, fathers' day, etc. :D

although, before the kids were born i worked in this french bakery and i had to be there at 3am until 7pm during major holidays. :barnie  but i had every sunday off. ooooooooohhhhhh, the pastries.

I'm not a baker, never worked in a bakery, but I know what you mean by hours. Years ago I worked at a neighborhood McDonalds until I got a job that I wanted. In those days work was life. Aperently the owner of the franchise saw me coming. When I left he never took me off as an employee. He would call me evenings and weekends if he was short. I live 2 minutes from them. I had filled in making the muffins. Something whent wrong with them, mine were WAY to big. They all puffed up to the top of the try above, the top try was even higher. He came back and watched me make them. I told him, I was fallowing the directions, add butter milk. The only problem was the mixture was designed for kids that can not bake. I know how to bake and work a quike bread. It was a FOOLS proof system, unless you know how. Then a funny thing happened, sales went thru the roof. People were coming in ordering a dozen biscuits for a nearly week we sold out before breakfast was over. My boss was getting extra from other MckyD's. he started ordering more mix, I started coming in at 2:30 -3AM, making biscuits until I had to leave to go to my job, at by 9:00. After several months I was worn out, and I know he had not been trying to find a permanent biscuit maker. I think he as mad at me, he never called me again to fill in again. Sales dropped, I was told it was a long time before the auto ordering got back to normal. He had a lot of buttermilk and mix delivered, he had to send back the mix and eat the buttermilk. BUMMER. . . . I might have stayed if he offered me what I was making at my job.
