My girls on the way up

Awesome can't wait to see them...

Hey all,
I have an update on my girls! Remember I have 4 RIR's that will be 20 weeks on Tuesday. Leticia almost squatted for me a couple of days ago when I reached into the coop to remove the feed trough. Wings weren't completely spread. We put straw in the nesting boxes a couple of weeks ago and they had shown no interest at all. Then last week we found Styrofoam eggs at Hobby Lobby so we put a couple in there and now there seems to be disturbance. Then my little Lemon who has always been the special one, has a much redder face than anyone else has completely squatted since about 3 days ago!!

Each morning the fake eggs have been moved around and Lemon has become much friendlier and more needy wanting to be around us all the time and just being a chatterbox. Leticia has also become much more vocal the last couple of weeks. Eggs are eminent!!

Snoop will probably be the next to show egg-laying behavior. So funny that Lemon was our smallest and least dominant hen and will likely give the first egg. Dottie is the biggest girl, although 3rd on the pecking order and her combs and wattles are much smaller and quite pale compared to her sisters. They are becoming big girls, maturing from chicks to juveniles to rebellious teens just recently. What a joy to watch them grow and change. No one is quite a lady yet, but that stage will surely come.

Thanks everyone for all your help along the way. What a wonderful group of people! I will post the moment we have an egg!

I agree about the cold. We are being robbed of our winter! I planted cucumbers and squash today with the anticipated upper 80's and the end of this week. Jeesh!
It sounds like you will be getting presents soon. There's nothing like finding that first egg!!

LKD, that's Angel?! Aww, he's all grown up!

Night 2, the meaties are all okay. No coyote attacks. I had a horrible dream last night that went out there and the entire chicken yard was destroyed. The meat coop was ripped apart, the layer coop had huge holes chewed in the wires...amazingly, everyone was okay. But it was wolves...these huge gigantic wolves that did the damage. It was a very disconcerting dream. I'm probably watching too many children's cartoons with my daughter...these wolves could speak.

My EE finally laid again yesterday. It has been weeks since her last egg.

kpgoldstar, I wonder if your RIR eggs are going to look different. I can't really tell my two barred rocks apart, but they lay different eggs. One lays a smooth brown egg, and the other lays a beautifully speckled egg.

I'm finishing up my garden this weekend. If it freezes, I'll cover everything.

Lawn people: My small grass area is finally coming in. How can I tell if it's the Bermuda poking up or the rye that I spread a few weeks ago? I laid sod last spring...do I need to re-seed the Bermuda or is it supposed to come back on its own?

Garden peeps: I have an old straw bale that I'm going to garden in. Do I need to add soil, or just plant directly in the bale? The online info varies in advice.

Bermuda grass will go dormant for winter, and then come back every year in spring. So far, my yard has not started turning green again yet, so I would venture to guess it's probably the rye you're seeing. Just keep it watered and it'll come back great. At my last house, the yard hadn't been watered for about eight years and was hard as clay. As soon as I moved in and started watering, it immediately took off and grew really well. It's amazing how well Bermuda grass can survive in our weather.

I have no idea about your straw bale, but I can say that when I had a bale out for Halloween decorations, we ended up with some rain and I ended up with a bunch of sprouts growing from that. I hadn't really thought about keeping it growing, but that's an interesting thought! Do keep us updated, please?!?

Our little silkie Cheryl has decided to stay put on some eggs.. All day as of now.
I added 2 other bantam eggs from her and our Clair a Millie Fluer du'ullcle.
Plus 1 BCM, 1 lighter olive, from mysong, 1 darker olive from flower, & 2 green E.E. eggs
from earlier today.. I know for sure 1E.E. was from foxy lady..
She used her tiny beak to move the new eggs right up under her as I sat them down
in front of her.. She is the cutest, precious little chicken we have..
I hope this moves her up in rank, while having to tend to them once they
are hatched.. She did not fuss that I was digg'n under her to mark the others..
Ok, so to recap.. 2 are hers I believe.. She is lavender/ blue show silkie & the rooster
is a partarage silkie/de'ullce mix.. Spelling is off but you get it.. No just to keep foxy lady
out of the nest..
Actually I don't know her breed color.. Moma hen Chris you posted a photo of your girl that
looks like her twin.. What is she? We are just newbies so I don't want to name her color if I am
not sure..

Earlier this morning when I went out & low & behold, she was running about as though nothing happened
False alarm...
