and so, because life can never be perfect, though I do try my darndest, I had been aiming at getting my flock numbers down to a manageable number for me since the kids no longer want to help now that they have bunnies. I thought I had gotten to that number but the wild birds had other ideas. half my chicken flock is coughing, bubbly eyes and pathetic. the sad part is that 5 of them are brand new layers. if you know me you know how I feel about medicating and creating typhoid marys, so once the kids go off to school, the culling will begin

I can't watch them sit around gasping for air. darn it!

I am by no means an expert, having just started my hive, but you're more than welcome to tag along any time. I'm up Northwest of Arrowhead Towne Center, though, so it's a drive for you. Sunday night, I should be going back out to Tempe to try and fix the mess that a friend's neighbor got herself into. She took my hives that I thought I wasn't going to need, and decided to set it up. A swarm quickly occuppied the empty hive. Except she had no idea what she was doing and did it completely wrong. It's sitting on a small, decorative table that is sinking in to the dirt, there is no bottom board, no queen excluded, six supers are stacked up and she has no interior top cover. The supers are not stacked correctly, either. I opted not to move it tonight because she already has a ****** off neighbor. I think we need to relocate them off the property.

Anybody in the East Valley want a hive? Just briefly looking, they seem very productive. They were very agitated, but with a screwed up hive like that, I don't blame them. They did not act Africanized, though.

I'm going to try to get ahold of a guy in Scottsdale that rescues hives and have him help. I'm a bit out of my league on this one, but I hate the thought of them being killed off by all these exterminators.

I might take you up on your offer one of these times. Ive wanted/looked into keeping bees for years but knew it wasn't possible at my house. I've got some irresponsible neighbors with even more irresponsible kids and can just picture rocks being hurled towards the hive. My MIL likes the idea of keeping them at her backyard so I'm back to trying to learn all I can. I've read books ,watched countless videos, etc just need to buy a suit and get some hands on exp.

Not pertaining to chickens but wanted to share. Went to Dallas yesterday to watch my daughter get her wings after a 5 week course for SWA. Her boyfriend Pete came in a day early and popped the question much to her surprise. 2 exciting memories in less that 24 hours. Pete works for US Air and my son just got hired by them as well, Things are looking good!!!

That's great! What an exciting time of life. A happy belated birthday to Cooper too!

New to Tucson. Had chickens in Oregon, but left them behind with the new owners. (Chickens are hot in Portland!) Our new home came with a large coop that's well fortified, but no chickens. So sad. My previous flock were lap chickens and I miss them!
If anyone needs to rehome some laying hens, please let me know. Thanks!

What interesting timing on the bee talk, I was going to ask about this just last week. I was wondering if there was anyone in the near area that wouldn't mind the occasional tag along. I'm trying to learn about bee keeping and the only thing I've found local so far is the monthly meeting in Phoenix, at that rate it would be years before I knew enough to keep any bees.I'm in mesa and because of my unpredictable work schedule the closer the better. Any takers?

Darn! The Valley Permaculture Alliance just had a bee keeping class a while back. I've taken a few of their classes in the passing months and have learned so much as each one. The instructors really know their subject and welcome any questions or concerns you might have.

I'll keep an eye out for the next bee keeping class and post it here when it comes up.

Hi, I live in Scottsdale and have chickens. Be sure to get a hearty bred that can take the heat. I have Golden Sex Links. They do well in the heat just be sure they have access to shade and lots of cool water. I also through a frozen water bottle into the coop sometimes but mostly they will find a shady spot and dig a little hole to lie in. Golden Sex Links are also regular layers and you can expect just about an egg a day from each girl. Happy chickening!!

Welcome! Most of my hens are gold or red sex links. Great producers and friendly too.

Speaking of the Valley Permaculture Alliance they might be hosting a chicken processing class taught by Sheri Schmeckpeper if there is enough interest. The date will be May 30th. Follow the link above for more information, you will have to email your interest in the class. The more of us there are the more likely it will be that the class will happen. I've taken classes by Sheri before and she is an amazing instructor! I think this class will happen at her house and I know she has a chicken plucker in her backyard so you would get to learn how to use one. In the past the chicken processing class required you to bring your own chicken to process but I'm not sure if that will be required at this one or not. Maybe you can sign up just to watch if you don't have one to process?

I just checked in with Mary, my broody, she now has 5 chicks. I put 12 under her, lost 2 that didn't make it out of the egg. 5 peeping and keeping warm, but in the picture I counted 12 eggs with 4 hatched, agin the strange math. Somehow, she had 18 eggs under her. Rather she has moved eggs from nests. Next door or 1 or more hen has been donating eggs to her. I can not wait until tomorrow night. I will have to move her again when they have all hatched to a better location.
