That's hilarious! I had no idea it was still on TV. My daughter watched the entire series when she was 9 too! I just read your post to her and she said, "Awwww, that is so cute!"

I am sure it is a native Quail. I have had a lot on my plater, that area has been un disturbed, and my chickens are close by. I have no Ida when she decided that it was a perfect place, clean, soft, protected, yet well ventilated. It just seems strange to make a nest in 2.5 ft of a door to a house.

The picture will be the last time I bother her. I will go on with the yard clean up. I talked to Chris and she agreed. Not to move anything around her or the shelving until the eggs hatch and she is gone. I do not know how long she has been there, how long it takes to incubate quail eggs. I hope she will be gone with her brood by the time I am done.

Her nest is a good 4' up, when the peeps come out they will fall thru the wire shelves. It is quite a drop. But Wood Ducks nest in trees and high up, and their hatchlings are very fluffy and have been dropping out of trees for ever.

Those are gorgeous Flower!  Irises are my wife's favorite flower.  We used to go out to the swamps in Louisiana to find all sorts of interesting colors when we lived there.  

I miss the Bayou so much. That's where I'm from.

@Flowers. Your flowers are amazing. My soil here is horrible so that's what is taking all of my attention first. Any suggestions for a yard that was uncared for, for quite a while? Compact dirt but the chickens are helping with that. Hoping to plant Buffalo Grass. I stopped watering what Winter grass grew from seeds I threw last year.

......for this hard Arizona clay that I also have in Mesa, I get Gypsum in a big bag and then I add garden soil (Kelloggs brand made locally) and I mix usually at least two parts of dirt to 1 part of garden soil with many handfuls of gypsum to help break down the clay in the native soil. Feel free to add dried chicken manure, but mix it in well as for trees it can be acidic, so maybe less for the new trees. The Garden Guy is on the Web and is local in Tempe for additional info. Channel 3, I believe has him on their morning News. I have grown things sent to me from Tennessee, ( a bare root )cocktail pear tree is doing well, ( two varieties took). I also have a lime tree, peach tree, Fuji apple, & a Dorset apple tree in the front yard w/ a huge orange tree, little grapefruit Ruby and many other vegetables grapes, sugar cane, bamboo, Bell peppers, assorted Chiles, tomatoes, garlic, gauva plant, banana etc

Oh God, our dirt is terrible here! Caliche is just like cement. If you can throw homemade or bought compost everywhere and let the chickens help work it into the soil that will help. You can also dig it down if you are going to plant veggies or new trees. If you are going to plant new grass that is a perfect time to add compost! In areas where your chickens can't get to you can apply gypsum, just follow the directions on the bag.

I agree, we have terribly hard dirt! I Always add Gypsum to Everything I've planted for my best results!

I plan on visiting Louisiana for several months. They have so much to offer, understanding of good food and good friends.
