Arizona Chickens

I use 2 places to check temperature. One right under the element (reptile heater) another a couple feet away. I provide a shallow box for them and they seem to like it, placing it near but not under the heat. I have had Mamma Hen out in 60 degree weather with her brood and they did fine. She would be ready to warm them up often. As a rule 100/95, 95/90, 90/85.... Is a good guide line, until feathers come in, 6 - 7 weeks on average. The age CX go to market,

That always shocks me. I look at them and think about the ones we eat are not much older. Well... Some of us eat, the un-lucky us that can not for one reason or another raise our own meat chickens.
I had a really bad day yesterday do DH checked on my 3 little peeps. All are and he even forgot to turn the heat lamp and the room light on last night. This morning I went in thinking they would be cold and they were pecking at the food and drinking.... just happy chicks.

I'm not sure I can raise them as meat. I thought about rabbits, but DH said he couldn't "Kill a Bunny" mind you. He has no problem killing when he's hunting. We dress out and butcher our own kill. We both have Elk Tags this fall. But he can't kill a "bunny". He said they are pets.... on the other hand, unless you hatch your own, I don't see it being cost effective. Eggs doesn't matter. Store Eggs are old. I can hardly wait until Nov? Dec? to get my first fresh egg.......

Hey everybody! So much to catch up on here! Will give it a try this weekend if you'd all kindly stop posting long enough for a girl to catch her breath! haha

In the meantime, I'm not sure where to post this question so I'll try you guys first. There was a large animal poop on my wall (about four feet high) out front this morning. Looks very much like bird poop in the sense that it had the white stuff that always goes with it. But then it was long like a cat or dog's poop. About four inches long and maybe an inch around. WHAT makes poop like that? Not an owl, I know what their poop looks like from when I was a Girl Scout!

I could post a photo...

There was a large Turkey Vulture (the one with the ugly ugly head) chowing down on a prairie squirrel on my place 2 days ago. Maybe he flew over your place. That is one big bird poop.

I am in Gilbert.  Does anyone know of a good chicken sitter who can take care of my 4 girls while we are away next week and/or possibly house sit for me for 3 weeks in July?  I am mostly concerned that its starting to warm up...

Still thinking..

Just talked to our dear friend that house sits.. Busy till October.. If you were closer it would be easier. I do have one other friend that I could call for you.. P.M. Us and I can forward your info to them..

I'm beat!
Spent the day stringing electric fence wire all day, crawling through places men weren't meant to go. While at work last night, my dog tried to dig under the fence of my chicken run. He did not succeed, but came close enough to terrify the chooks. Last night when I found the damage, I thought I might trench around the run and put in a concrete footer. Lots of digging involved, and I'm allergic to work. Decided to electrify the fence instead as the lesser of two evils. There is a new Tractor Supply about 15 miles south of me, so I decided to check it out (they just opened this store 5-10). To my pleasant surprise, they had everything I needed in stock, and the bill was less than $100 (barely). Now, if they would do installation, too....
Got all the wire strung and insulated, feeder cable and ground cable installed. In the AM, will install a new junction box where I plan on installing the fence controller, then we'll go LIVE!

P.S. if the lights go out in Tucson tomorrow morning, will somebody feed my chickens?

Allergic to work, that's funny! :lau

Hiyas! Been a while. Life's been crazy around here with illness, death in the family, work, vacations. BUT my new babies arrived on Tuesday and I'm so happy. I ordered though Mypetchicken back in Dec. Here are the new girls.

Silver Laced Polish

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte

Blue Orpington

White Silkie

Still thinking of names. I think the silkie will be named Bunny though. My pop pop used to call my Gram that and she just passed away a couple weeks ago and I think it's fitting. Hope everyone is doing well
Cute, cute and even more cuteness!! How fun! Glad to see you back Twinklin!
