Arizona Chickens

Did I mention I'm finally rooster free? Just my 5 hens again, and it sure does seem a lot more peaceful in their neck of the yard. Gah, never doing the rooster-for-meat thing again, what a huge waste of feed and time. So far, I've had a crock pot rooster--delicious, and a smoked rooster--also delicious...so I guess there's the benefit.

I've currently got a 2-yr old rooster in the pressure cooker, along with chicken feet and seasonings

I'm pressure cooking for an hour so this old bird will be tender.

here are the new babies one more has pipped just waiting on it. I have 6 more but I have not seen any signs from those ones yet. i also have another broody hen (another blue AM) and I just put 18 eggs under her. We will see what we get. I am eggcited.

Hi, I joined BYC yesterday a week after getting some new chicks to add to my existing flock. I work in Tucson but live outside Benson. I have read the last dozen or so pages of this thread. So many cute chicks, beautiful chickens, and tragic losses. I am looking forward to being active on BYC.

So one of my chicks turned out to be a rooster! He was the nicest and prettiest of the bunch so imma keep him

It took a couple of days, but the girls finally figured out the mister! Now that's their favorite corner!

There is a roll of bamboo "fencing" strung outside the back welded wire fence (two-fold purpose - gives them shade from the afternoon sun and keeps the chickens out of the sight of the doberman's next door). There is camo cloth over the top, and what shows in the picture is actually just shadows!

So my only laying hen Pepper the sliver laced wyandotte has been weird, nothing major, little things...

* One night she didn't go back to coop, instead just standing there like a moron.
* Quite often, she open her mouth like gagged, with some sound like being gagged.
* One day I found her egg on the floor of the coop, not nesting box.
* Today the egg is broken, nesting box wet and messy, the remaining of the egg (shell and stuff) on the floor of the coop.

I know the weather is cruel, I have shades, clean cool water all day, mister on 1 hour from noon to 1am. Her egg production hasn't dropped yet, lay almost everyday, got 23 (including the broken one) since May 1st till today the 27th. By the way, she is still young, laid her first egg on March 31st. Laid 22 eggs in month of April.

So, what wrong with her? Should I be worried?

Just gave our last one away today.. These boys were 4 months old any way..
