Arizona Chickens

I only keep one rifle and one pistol loaded.....for predators, of course. Even so, when anybody wants to look at one, I clear the action before handing it over, even though I know it's not loaded. One of my worst moments was when I let a buddy check out an 1891 Argentine Engineers carbine. This thing has an original leather sling, with silver conchos for buttons, and a silver buckle. He dry fired it, and broke the firing pin. That was about 9 years ago, and I still have not found a replacement firing pin for it.

Many, many thanks to City Farm! She sent me a PM this morning and told me there was an 1891 Argentine Mauser firing pin on eBay. This really surprised me, as eBay has historically been very anti-gun, A few years back, they bought out PayPal, and I used to get threatening termination letters from PayPal every time I bought any gun parts online. Here is a pic of the 1891 carbine.....

Oddly enough, while I was searching for the firing pin, I ran across 14 listings for 1891 Argentine bayonets. Most of them were for the rifle, not the carbine, and they are not interchangeable. I did find one listing for the correct bayonet, but it is listed at $250 +$22 shipping. Maybe next payday.....

@K9Dave here is a better pic of my Remmy 700 "predator" rifle, with a desert camo DuraCoat finish....

Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
hello, we are in phoenix. We have 8 ladies. We love our babies, as they are very unique. They know when their daddy is going given then some veggie. My husband has created a chicken play area w mist and the chicken coop was build on a shade area..

I'm extremely new too. When I first got my chicks and they are the same age as yours, but they face planted and even laid on their side.
was so scared I posted pics to the great people hear for answers. They were just tuckered out.

They are so BIG now. 2 buff orps and 1 Ameruacana. The Amer is the boss. Got a pre fab Hen House from Shoppers, and she scoots the others up to the roost in the evening or when the dog sits to watch. It's still sitting in the family room. Still afraid to put them outside in this heat.

we are looking into the Nipple system for water and to put up some shade screen before we put them out. DH is afraid they are getting spoiled with the AC.

Any suggestions on "when" to put them out? They just have wings and tails now. will no longer fit in the tea cup.....

They can go outside now, IF you can keep them cool enough. Plenty of shade, plenty of water. This time of year, keeping them warm enough is not the problem.

It's the heat I'm worried about. I think we'll wait until we get a shade screen put up. We have the coop set on a big cardboard and I use the adult bed pads, so it's easy to clean and doesn't stink. They are really cute to watch. entertaining how instinct kicks in. when the sun gets low, the get loud and then give up and scoot up into the roost. Just like little kids fighting bedtime.

Better roost material: 2" dowels or 2x4 on edge? My coop walls are built, time for final assembly soon. Need to finish designing the roost :)

Also, what's the best way to make a ramp for the hens? My coop is 3' off the ground.

2X4 laid flat, not on edge. A 10" wide pine board with 1/2" square sticks glued every 4 or 5 inches. Make it long enough so the slope is about 30 degrees or less.
