Arizona Chickens

Hi everyone,
We have 6 chickens that are a little over a year old and we used to get 4-5 eggs a day. We actually have only 5 chickens now because Buttercup passed, no idea why, but we're extremely sad.
Well now we're getting only 1-2 eggs a day. Today no egg at all. I live in the Phoenix area so I was wondering if the heat was to blame.
Has anyone else noticed low egg production in the summer? The chickens were doing fine in egg laying until recently.
Our chickens get lots of shade and fresh water and a daily block of ice. Which they take turns standing on, it's hilarious :)
I've also noticed a high frequency of soft-shelled eggs.
Is it a Phoenix-summer thing? I realize it's hard for anything to thrive in this heat :(
Thoughts anyone?

I am SO nervous!

and excited! Tomorrow is Lockdown for my first time ever hatching experience. I "think" there are 12 viable eggs out of the original 15 and am going to do one last candling tonight.

Please send me some good karma for a successful hatch.
I have Ameracaunas and Black Copper Marans and Wheaton Marans and one Blue Laced Wyandotte.

Odds are, not ALL of them will be roos, right? Oh, heck, I don't care if they are, I live out where I can have all the roos I want! LOL
Good luck, I hope your hatch is as good as mine was.

It's the extra calcium in the layer that isn't good for the youngsters. The higher protein is actually good for the growing birds.
Isnt that the truth. I still have one chick in with the turkeys I bought from you. She is scared of her own shadow and wont go in with the other chickens. Funny considering she is twice the size of the other birds since shes been eating turkey rations with the higher protein. I call her turkey chicken.

Hi, my name is Tanya. I live in North Central Phoenix (AZ).

In May 2014 we adopted 3 chicks from my daughter's kindergarten classroom that they had hatched from eggs. We had been wanting chickens, so we thought it would be perfect. We even built them a brand new coop that attaches to the outside wall of our home, which happens to be the outside wall to 2 bedrooms. We also fenced off about 1/4 of our backyard for a chicken run.

Well, turns out, ALL three chicks are ROOSTERS!!  It happens to be illegal in Phoenix to have roosters. :(  We love them, they are gorgeous, but they are VERY loud, especially when they all 3 crow AT THE SAME EXACT TIME! We were told that they are Aloha chickens, which happen to be a new breed made here in Arizona. To me, a novice, it looks like 2 are Alohas and 1 is a Rhode Island Red. One Aloha is quiet large, although smaller than the RIR, but the other is a little pipsqueak. The little one is the loudest though and very talkative. :(

Once we started to suspect they were roosters, we did go to Pratt's, the local feed store, and get 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks. They are all hens, thankfully.

So, I've been reading the forums, looking for advice on keeping chickens healthy here in AZ and, once I can, will be probably posting a thread in the Re-homing section. :(

My children, hens, husband, and I will be sad to see the roosters go. They have been hand raised, hand fed, and held everyday, so they are very friendly. They will even sit down next to you or on your lap if you sit down in their run for long enough.

If we did not already have a rooster, we would take one.. Check out this video.. If you need a color, we have extra.. Private message us if you decide to try it.

Definitely heat related. I was only getting two every other day for two weeks with eight hens. I just got four today so that was a nice surprise. This is my third summer and I've decided it's just more important to get them through the summer alive than trying to keep them producing through the summer.

One of our chickens had a mystery band around her leg and when I removed it... :th I have no idea how it got wrapped around her leg or where it came from, but I'm definitely not going to "open her". Geez.
That is too cool! How old was the hen when you got her?

Good Morning.

Does anyone know where a Slaughter House or Processing place is for beef? I know they're around but can't find them. I'm wanting to buy Green Tripe for my dogs. There are lots of internet ways to get it, but I prefer fresh. Also do any of you guys ever or would you ever be interested in splitting a Cow or Hog?
