Working on my brooder, almost done. The chick's love it.
VOLTAGE CHECK - GOOD!
Just finished feeding and watering the chickens this morning, stepped out the gate and saw one of those big green June bugs flying around the outside of the run. Tried to catch it, and accidentally contacted the wrong wire, about knocked me on my butt. Was wondering if it was still working - question answered!
I have a Plymouth barred rock, probably the smallest chicken I have, but also the quickest. When a June bug does get into the run, 99 times out of a hundred, she is the winner. Everybody else is chasing her around, but I've never seen her lose one yet.
nThat's a beauty - won't last long for the chicks though - they will be perching on top of that rain within the week!!! Just my experience. I've used a baby playpen and by the time they are three or four weeks old they are trying to fly up to perch on the edges of the playpen!! Its a beauty though - and will be much easier to clean than the playpen!!! Enjoy.
Ya, it's not done yet, they are already trying to get up on the edge. I still need to add another 16 inch's for the top, which I'm building now. I designed it so the middle slats slide out and I can clean the pen easier. Plus I can tear it down and store it without taking up too much space.
For real, on your butt? You sure your ok?? Have you seen a chicken touch it?
I am on pins and needles..two of my eggs have pipped the shell since last night!!No defined hole, but cracked and wiggling. Monday is day 21.
I, too, have 4 pullets that grew up together and just the one is a brat. LOL I picked each one up yesterday and petted her. The only one who didn't talk to me while I held her was the brat girl, but she sat quietly in my arms and didn't wriggle at all. Go figure.
I'm still waiting for the first egg. The girls are just 20 weeks old today, so it might be a bit longer. (I check every day tho')
How eggciting! Take pics & post here please! I find myself checking the incubator every 5 minutes when they first pip, then end up pulling up a chair & stay glued there so I don't miss anything.
Yay! Take pics if you can when the first one emerges! Mine started laying right at about 19 weeks, but they are production hatchery reds. It was also late February so no heat stress to be bothered with.
YIPPEE!!! First one has hatched and is peeping and moving all over the place. It's a Black Copper Marans. I will take pics when the chick moves into a good spot under the window. It's still real wet. The other pipped egg is an Ameracauna. This is SO cool I'm about to pop. LOL![]()

Eggciting is an understatement! I keep peeking in every half hour or so and talking to the darned eggs and the chick. DH is trying to be cool about the whole thing, but I catch him peeking in there every time he passes the incubator. LOL Pictures will be posted later today, promise.
Thanks to everyone that replied about low egg production in the summer. Relieved it is just the heat and also sad that it is the heat. We give them oyster shell but I might add a little more.
My poor girls. I do a lot of apologizing to them for how hot it is
51 days until October....not that I'm counting.
I noticed that your chick pen seems to be in the house. How long do you keep them in the house, if that's the case? I got jumped on royally on another forum for keeping chicks in the house. Albeit they stayed in longer than I intended but I was recovering from open heart surgery and my husband was unable to fix the coop in order to put them outside with the bigger chickens. That's a beauty - won't last long for the chicks though - they will be perching on top of that rain within the week!!! Just my experience. I've used a baby playpen and by the time they are three or four weeks old they are trying to fly up to perch on the edges of the playpen!! Its a beauty though - and will be much easier to clean than the playpen!!! Enjoy.

Yes, for real. I think I touched it with both hands and got a circuit through my arms. Wire is on the outside of the run where the chickens can't touch it.
Really, I'm OK. The lysdexia is not a new thing.
