I did some research and it appears that this is a fairly uncommon disease outside of commercial poultry industry, primarily the broiler birds. It affects turkeys far more than chickens. There is a vaccine available that combines antibodies against this disease and fowl pox at the same time.
It's been hitting several backyard breeders so far, far from big hatcheries. They aren't in the southwest but my concern is shipped eggs CAN carry it. I left a message for the vet I trust the most, she's located in the White Mountains, and am going to see if she has the capabilities to test my orps for this. My other birds are all from local breeders but the orp eggs came from out of state. I wasn't aware of this disease then so didn't dip, fortunately I have all my breeds seperated.
