Arizona Chickens

Here's a pic of my Navajo Churro wether and one of my ewes when they were young. Their coats get very long and it's not unusual to reach a foot or so long. They're double coated with the outer coat being coarse and the other fiber soft. This is the wool used in woven Navajo rugs, it's quite sturdy. Some people shear twice a year and some once, depending on what you want to do with the wool. They come in a variety of colors and some of the rams sport 4 horns. This guy has huge curling horns now and you have to be careful not to get nailed by them but he is super gentle.

I have eggs in the incubator now - English Orpingtons in Chocolate, Black, Blue, Splash and White, also Golden Marans. I have English Gold Laced Orpington eggs coming in tomorrow. Not sure what type you're looking for but I think @desertmarcy has quite a few available right now and she's got very nice birds plus you'll know whether they're pullets or cockerels. Mine, with my luck, will most likely be 98% cockerels

You might want to consider a hair breed like the Barbados - no shearing and they do great in the heat. If you do want a wooly sheep consider Arizona's own Navajo Churro. They're a smaller breed and do fine with the climate, they're also listed as critically endangered with a little over 500 registered.
The owner here has a herding dog that needs the work so looks like we're getting a few ewes soon. Could maybe get a discount for more and I have a horse trailer for hauling them as well.

Self promoter. Got 14 today. WTH am I doing? I went to get 4 Marans to join whoever hatches out of my 11 remaining eggs. I'll be happy if I get 2! And what do I do?

  1. 6 Marans (want those dark brown eggs, possibly to get olive eggers with a Cream Legbar?)
  2. 3 Gold sex links: Well, I wanted to be sure I got some pullets, and my new little gold sex link lays the biggest light brown eggs.
  3. 3 EE: I'd love to have some green or blue eggs (esp. if my remaining 2 CCL eggs don't make it to hatch).
  4. 2 Wynadottes: one chipmunky, one black ... uh, coz they are cute?

Pictures? Of course ... just a moment, please.

Some of the group.

They said Marans, but it looks the same as the Barred Rock chickies. Hope they know what they were talking about . LOL.

Gold-laced Wynadotte? There were only two brown ones in the cage ... the rest were black.

Black or silver Wynadotte?

Agh!! OUR neighbor & dear friends & us are wanting a sheep for mowing the grass.. Anyone have advice.. Plus they will need a friend..thanks in advance..
Oussant breed. Smaller than a normal sheep???
What about goats? There are many mini breeds and if they don't want to deal with milk they can get neutered boys.

That would be a Cuckoo Marans with the white spot on the head. Don't be disappointed if you don't get very dark eggs from that one as the Cuckoo variety doesn't lay as dark as the Black Copper especially if they are hatchery stock chicks. Does the chick have any feathering on it's legs?

Queen Creek. My main focus is on improving my English Orpingtons and Golden Cuckoo Marans so am getting eggs in the next several months from different lines than what I have. I get eggs because the chicks are a little out of my price range, not that the eggs are inexpensive but a bit more palatable on the budget.
