As flower said, close some holes. If it has 2 large ventilation holes as most styrofoams do, close 1, you open the other on lockdown day. Get yourself one of those heavy duty straws like the ones used for refillable water bottles, most stores carry them next to the water bottles like Target or Walmart, and a funnel with an end that will fit the straw. You'll use that during lockdown. In the meantime, you want to fill the channels with water as warm or warmer than the temp of the bator. When I was using a styrofoam bator I would put 4 small mason jars inside as well. I also used an aluminum knitting needle to enlarge the holes allowing the straw to fit, you want to be careful if there's a washer and screw near the hole holding the heating element in place.
I have never successfully dry hatched Marans eggs and was told from a few in the Marans club it was because they are a swamp bird.
...speaking of Marans and since they seem to be auto sexing... (correct? ) I would be very interested...now that I only seemed it hatch one out of that last batch. I think what I did is trying to hatch maybe an egg that wasnt fertile, which is not likely or I had too long of a cooling period in the incubator. :hit

Well folks, ...I just have an orphan it seems. My poor chick. Anybody selling turkey chicks???

Thursday I got to see @City farm and she helped me candle a couple of my eggs that were my leghorns. They didn't even seem to have developed, unfortunately, but it was sure nice to see her!
Nice getting to know you East Valley BYC'ers! :thumbsup
We are thankful for your fertile egg's.. yes, i do think it did get to cold in your incubator.. hope all of the eggs we got from you hatch. Did you want the chick's after she is done raising them?

This guy has gone missing. we let him live in the front yard, we did not want him to fight with our other rooster. he could mess up his comb. So now we have another rooster, a bielefelder. He is such a sweet dude. P.M. us if interested..

lol...obviously I don't know how to do this quote things very well. (not sure where I went wrong!)
Sure let me know after she's done raising them, the kids might enjoy seeing the chicks once she's got them finished to her standards! Keep any you might like! :)

Photo's of the flock, being lazy
adorable babies! (I know they aren't babies, but everything is a precious boo boo baby to me.)

on another note: Has anyone had any experience with an egg being weird? I cracked the egg to make brownies and the yolk fell out, but the whites were still inside the egg, like gelatin or snot. It didn't even come out when we held the half up, it just oozed and got longer and longer. They were clear, but with lots of bubbles.

:/ one of my button quail died about a week ago. Went to the AAS birdmart today, but had no luck finding any quail there. Bought a nice pair of diamond doves though.

If anyone has any button quail for sale around mesa, let me know! I dont mind driving either!
