Arizona Chickens

I went out into my coop and moved my buff orpingtons to the new roost. I was using a flashlight, because its dark out there of course, and I was looking around. I saw the plastic easter eggs that were all over the coop. Then I saw this pale egg sitting near where my 17 week old slow white broilers are piled up for the night. My first thought was, "Is that an egg?" Then I was like "No, I know one of them has been squatting for a couple of weeks but surely not yet." I reached down and picked it up. Yep a real egg. Then I thought, "Which of my kids put this silky egg in here?"

I buy eggs at the farmer's market and sometimes they are super tiny. But this one is even smaller than those. 1 to 1 1/2 inches. I'm a new chicken mama. Exciting!

Oh and here is a picture of the chicks.

Well I was staring into the incubator for like the fith time and I saw two of the eggs shake. ITSS ALLLIIIIIIIVVVEEEEEE! hahahah. OH man I keep walking in there to look.

LOL! On day 22 I walked into our "hatching room" to find my husband leaning over the incubator, his ear hovering just above the top and his face tense with concentration as he told me, "I think I hear them tapping." He was very disappointed when I informed him it was the fan in the incubator rattling, not chicks tapping. As funny as it was it was also very endearing as up to that point I thought I was the only one obsessing over those darn little eggs. I spent a lot of hours staring at those eggs, willing them to hatch, and terrified that they wouldn't.

Hoy, hice un plata de pollo para la cena. Today, I made chicken pot pie for dinner. My GF is teaching me Spanish. She doesn't know how to say chicken pot pie, so that just says chicken plate.
The phrase I learned yesterday is "fuimos a la tienda y compramos a la comida y tostadora, y palillos de dientes. We went to the store and bought food, and a toaster, and toothpicks.

....Estes bien! Yo tiengo hambre!
(....very good! I am hungry!). :D

Congratulations on your first egg!  I remember how excited I was.  My chicken math has turned to rabbit math.  I have been trying my hand at a few different things in my back yard before choosing where I want to retire and decide what type of animals i want to have around me.  Everything I am doing is on a much smaller scale than many of you have.  I currently live in an HOA neighborhood. Our neighbor says when they hear mooing, they are calling the people with the white jackets.  We moved here 10 years ago from new york.  The neighbors want to know where their city neighbor went.  I told them she found her happy place :cd :bun

We are going to be so eggcited when our W.A. Lay's her first blue egg!! So far all of the close neighbors say how much they love the rooster.. I'm like, HUH? Again.. We have like 3 neighbors here that have had or have roosters.. We are right by A.S.U. We got rid of our other guy, cause he was so loud. The no crow collar did not work, this time it has worked.. Our hen duck, Lauren is loud sometimes.. We caught a new neighbor visiting from out of town trying to find where the duck sound was coming from.. It was so funny.. Plus we have the sign that say's. Wildlife habitat..

So after a recent move, we are restarting our chicken experience. Here is the progression of the coop build so far. I got a lot done today and it should be ready for our birds very soon. Still need paint, wire mesh and another set of nesting boxes. I will post a few more pictures when I get some more progress.
