Arizona Chickens

Yeah, no whole foods here, but maybe next time my husband goes to PHX I'll hitch a ride that way I can nab some duckweed and grapefruit seed extract at the same time! All this talk of hatching chicks makes me want more chickens. I'm already at the max I can have.

I do have a noisy rooster who might have to go away if I can't find a way to make him more quiet. He woke me up at 5:30 AM, the sun wasn't even up. I grabbed him off the roost, stuffed him in a dog crate, and covered him with blankets. He was quiet until I let him out. I tried tightening his no crow collar more but its difficult for me to do. I think I'm going to get my husband to help me tighten it more before tomorrow and I'll keep in the crate until we can get him muted. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to give him away.
I am headed through Yuma the next two Sundays (next Sunday and the one after) If you need me to bring anything from here. (phoenix, east valley area...) If anyone is interested in the ROO as well, I can give him a ride. I should have a carrier in the car on the way home, I sold some chickens to a friend and she took my carrier to S.D. She is supposed to give it to my son's father to bring back! Let me know!

Mesa feed barn.
%30 more nutrients when you ferment the big sky.. Better for them... Less waist & it expands more than double in size. You get your money's worth.. However our ducks do not like it.. We get them pellets.. Plus both ducks and chickens get a treat just about everyday.. Just pulled up our neighbors weed's, They were gone in no time.. This neighbor we get them from doesn't spray any chemicals in their yard.. Free flock food..
How funny my ducks gobble up the fermented feed the same as the chickens; in fact have two Welsh Harlequin girls in the layer house and they are first in the feed trough, but they were hatched and raised eating it....

Well, the inevitable finally happened. An egg leaked in my incubator. I had been noticing a yucky smell in the bathroom where the incubator is but didn't think to look IN the incubator for the source. Duh. Thought the bathtub drain trap had dried out again and the sewer smell was the cause of the odor. It happens a couple of times a year. Nope. This time it's the incubator.

The blasted egg dripped all over the turner, so I have to figure out how to keep 30+ eggs warm and more or less in position for however long it takes me to disassemble, scrub and sanitize the incubator then get it set up again. Going to be a long and stinky night.

Hope the other eggs are not contaminated. They weren't in direct contact with the yucky stuff.

Ugh, sorry about that mess!

He's not the best stock. He's difficult to catch out of the coop, but rarely struggles when held. He's a bit traumatized by the collar adjusting. All he does is avoid me though. His girls are the same way. Docile will eat from my hand but not super friendly. If anyone wants him, you are more than welcome to him.

If I don't get up there next week, I will definitely hit you up to bring me some of that duckweed. I have a kiddie pool just waiting for some. Sill was the one that offered to give me a start.

Sure, Gallo, tree tobacco is invasive for you. You can grow anything, LOL!

I've never been able to get it to grow. I have seen some beautiful tree specimens of it. Love those plants.

We really liked the tree too, super fast growing and the texture and size of the leaves are interesting. In the first year it grew long and spindly all the way up into the utility lines so we bobbed it off at about 6'. The second year it grew in much bushier and had a neat shaped crown. The only problem we had with it was the tremendous amounts of seeds it made. We were constantly pulling up seedings all over the yard and alleyway. When we cut it down in it's third year it had a trunk that was nearly 8" in diameter! I think one reason it did so well was because it was in one of the sunniest places in the yard and it was also sending roots out to the nearby flower beds that were on drip irrigation. Now there's a nice fuji apple tree where the tree tobacco once grew.

Hello all! I had the best, most friendly and curious hen named Beverly who passed away a couple weeks ago and I am heartbroken. I didn't want to have any more chickens for a while after her but a rogue chicken showed up in a neighbors yard just a couple days after Beverly passed and who else to ask catch her but the crazy chicken lady! So I scooped her up and she reminds me so much of Beverly it's very eery! I have no idea what she is (bantam something is all I know) but she is warming up to me and even has rode one shoulder for a bit after a good amount of coaxing.

Anyways so now I have a chicken (never found her original owners) but I want a friend or four for her to hang with. I have my heart set on naked necks (Turkens) but I have no idea where to get them from. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them

There are a few people here on the AZ thread raising NNs. I hope your mysterious new bird gets some flock mates soon.

Acctaully there was a story about chicken's running wild in a Phoenix neighborhood.. It was last year.. . Some neighbors liked them and some did not.. You would have to find the egg nest pile, or boy would you have a stinky find some day..

Last year we woke up one morning to yelling and a big commotion. One of our neighbors peacocks got out when a tree branch fell on part of her fence. It was funny to see all these men out there trying to round up 5 big peacocks! And those birds can really fly! Eventually they got them back into a temporary pen and everyone pitched in to mend the broken fence and trim the tree but it was great entertainment.

Sorry that happened and hope the other eggs are ok. Don't know how far along you are before hatch day but don't forget up until day 18 even broody hens leave their eggs for awhile each day. Keep us updated on your hatch. Crossing my fingers for you on a successful hatch!
