Arizona Chickens

Just tagged and weighed my first batch of Cornish X chicks at 3 weeks of age. Average weight of 37.45 ounces, with the fattest being 43.7 oz, and the smallest 31.25 oz.
I googled a Cornish X average growth chart, and my birds are significantly heavier than what it shows, both in individual weight and average weight.
For those who have raised meatballs before, is it time to start cutting back on their feed? I am currently free feeding Nutrena turkey starter at 30% protein.

WOW!

double Wow! ;)

Getting Serama juvenile roosters for fair next year for showmanship!

They live at school for the moment, but one is a gold laced, and one is a cream frizzle. Their names are Curly Fry Jr, or C.C. Jr. , and Bombastic.

Wil post pictures later <3

Free rooster. We took this rooster in when my boss threatened to throw it to the coyotes. It's starting to pick on our old Serama rooster, so need to find it someplace else to live. We don't have hens. We're in Desert Hills. If interested, e-mail [email protected].

Hello AZ peeps! I am new to chickens but I've already fallen in love with my 3! I'm in South Phoenix and I'm pretty sure my HOA will be a nightmare if they find out about my chicks, especially if any start to crow! My cat brought home about a week old chick(best present to date) and now it's at 3 weeks and it's buddies are about a week- week and a half younger. Yes, you read that correctly...buddies... We are feed store suckers! I just wanted to say hello to you all and curious to see where everyone was located. I am currently trying to design a coop/run for my side yard. It's 4ft wide X 25ft long. Any pointers or tips before I begin? Any materials to avoid? Should I use treated wood? It's currently dirt/weeds and mainly shady(north side of my house) throughout the day. Any pointers would be appreciated! Oh and my chicks from left to right are "Nugget"(taking a dirt bath), this was my cat present, a mutt chicken. Then B.B.(Big Bird), a Polish Bantam, and last but not least "C.L.(Chicken Little, or Little for short)", is a Sultan Bantam. The 2 bantams were bought at Cal Ranch in Laveen and apparently I've learned that I'll have to wait a few months before knowing their sexes. :/

It's a slippery slope you're on, my friend. You have just joined the DARK SIDE. I foresee in your future, selling your house, buying a place out in the sticks, living off grid with solar power and a well, and sharing it with a donkey and a cow, and 3 goats. You have been warned.

P.S. don't use treated wood.

P.P.S. WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Welcome aboard! I feel for ya with the HOA. Just do what I used to do when I lived in a HOA and keep everything low profile. If you followed HOA rules you wouldn't do anything but sit in your living room and watch TV - not most people's cup-o-tea. I used to have 5 HF amateur radio antenna's up in my old hood in Peoria and no one knew. But the first weed that popped up and I'd get a letter. Just bare the chickens in mind the next time you move and read the CC&R's before submitting a bid. Anyway I don't think they'll make much noise. Mine are generally quiet and the dogs are much, much louder. Stay away from treated wood but most everything else will work fine. 2X4's and plywood are God's gift to man (and women). Aso I used 1/2" hardware cloth instead of chicken wire - it's more expensive but it'll keep small critters out and coyotes can't bite through it like they can chicken wire. Good luck and keep everyone posted on your progress.

@Agarrard - I would use treated wood where it is touching the ground or might get dirt/bedding kicked up against it. You can paint the wood so the chickens don't come into direct contact with the treated parts. I recently mucked out my coop/run. The treated wood at the base is fine. The untreated but painted plywood sheathing has rotted away everywhere the bedding had been kicked up against it. There is a railroad tie along the back side of that wall so most predators can't get in. But I am going to have to rebuild that wall soon. If I had run treated wood higher up the wall it would not have been a problem. The coop is only five years old. Sigh.
