I live in the Vail area, I will be building my incubator at school, and keeping it there.

I wanna be able to keep an eye on the eggies at school. Will be incubating Silkies and , Hopefully, Easter Eggers come second semester , so I really gotta be watchful with the bantams especially. A white Australorp chick died last night at school because too many people were touching him and he wasn't under a real brooder light, he is just under a eco-friendly twirly light. So, he wasn't warm enough to live......

watchful eyes are definitely needed at this school......

The only problem is, i dont have most of the materials. So, if anyone in the tucson/sahuarita area would be willing to donate or sell some materials for me to build this, it would be very appreciated!

That roofing, Lowe's has it for pretty cheap. Now granted, it is never in the measurement you'll want, but I recommend just buying it longer, and cutting it. way easier.

It's also green, but green is prettier in my opinion anyway XD

Anyone out there with enclosed runs noticing more flies buzzing around in the AM? I am. I never had any in the coop but ever since the monsoons kicked off I've noticed a lot more in the run. I've been raking it out about every other day to keep the manure down since that's what I'm suspecting they're attracted to. I just thought it odd there'd be more around during the monsoon than before. I hope it doesn't keep up like this after the monsoon.

Flies bloomed over here again. They are horrible. After the last really bad bloom, I started getting the fly predators again. They've been bad, and I have a lot of birds, so I'm getting a bag every week. And I also put up the stinky fly traps. Still lots of flies. They are attracted to the manure and moisture. With the rains, more moisture, they find more places to lay eggs. I hate flies.

Once winter comes around, all those pesky flies, ants, and gnats go away. Hoping for it like heck now.......

I have had all of these come up in our yard more than ever now. My rooster actually gets really frustrated with them, hes so cute. He'll squawk at them and peck the air until they leave him alone, or die down.

I've been putting Diatomaceous earth down, it really helps to make the insects die/go away, and it is safe for the chooks to eat.

maybe try that? They sell it at ACE hardware in the chicken section, I think it is $8.00

Thanks for the info ladies. This is my first go-around with chickens here in AZ so I didn't know if it was just me or everyone else too. Most days they've been tolerable as long as I keep things tidy but today they've been really horrendous - worst I've seen so far. Banaynay - I have a bag of DE so I'll throw some down. Any relief for the gals is worth it. I'm heading over to Tractor Supply in a few minutes too so I'll see if they have anything over there. I don't want to put out any fly paper or I'm liable go out there later and see a bunch of chickens stuck to it. Yeah I'll be really glad when they go away too.

Gosh I just got to thinking, I passed near your way last Tuesday on the way to Nogales and it was like seriously pouring down rain from Tangerine Rd all the way to the border, so I guess you guys are really having to contend with flies and such. I guess I should count my blessings. It's nice in that part of the state though. I believe you have a better climate for growing wine grapes than I have up here North of Phoenix. The only kind that really do well here are Barbera and Tempranillo. The others will grow but the acids drop too much relative to the sugars. Barbera and Tempranillo hold up well despite the heat though. Well, good luck and I hope you have a fly-free day.

the DE is a real life saver for me, our ant population out here in Vail are horrendous, so having it around is fantastic, especially because i'm allergic to ant bites.

ive heard that a 5 gallon bucket of water just around the outside is a great help too. they fall in and drown. unfortunately then it harbors mosquitoes... I can't win for loosing around here XD

Water Bags -
An old wives tale? Maybe. But considering it costs practically nothing to try, why not?
How to Do It:

• Fill a heavy-duty gallon-sized bag (Ziploc freezer bags would work) half-full with water
• Add 1-2 pennies.
• Hang by doorways and entrances to the coop.

Some people say this is dumb, while others swear by it. If you have a good water-baggie story, be sure to let me know in the comments!

especially those little pi$$ ants! they leave pussy welts when the bite.

Up in Sonoita there is a farm I go to, Herris Heritage, they grow grapes that are fantastic!
