Well, my younger Splash and Blue Australorps are now 17 weeks old. I am hoping to get my first pullet eggs out of them in about 2 more weeks! I think that the splash pullet will lay hers first as the comb and wattles are turning red faster than the blue pullets is.

Hi all

Been off for bit. Trying to get some things done & dealing with pain issues too....anyway......

I've this hen, red, whose either a rir, production red or something of the sort. I don't have photos on this puter so I'll have to add one later. She attacked my chihuahua at the scruff of his neck a few days ago. Plus, she'd gone after me a few days prior when I was putting everyone to bed. I've isolated her, but she seems to be getting worse. I'm reaching in to feed, change water, try to touch her & she goes to bite. This evening, I'm going to take the 2 liter water bottle out that I freeze to help keep her cool after dark (the porch light is on) & she pounces to bite my hand.

I've had the suggestion about the chicken glasses & squirt bottle. Any other ideas? She's in the top of a 2 story ferret nation cage, it's about 2'x4'. She's a branch, food, water, a rock, bedding, & a box filled partway with dirt. I also give her treats both in her food dish & on the bottom of the cage for her to peck & find. Oh, a hanging bell with various bunny treat/chews. She's in sight of the others. Late this afternoon Goldie, gold sex-link, was roosting on the bottom door next to her.

I see feathers that remind me of a roo, but no crowing from her. Maybe she's confuse? Really late blooming?

My plan has been to keep her there for several days, ideally til I see she chills out a bit, then let her back out. Hoping that'll put her at the bottom of the chain. Even with me & the pups. No, my dogs won't do anything until it goes a bit further. Indy did growl & show teeth along with try to shake her off. He's scared to go out now alone. Poor thing is smaller than everyone except the OEGB...that's in debate if they're standing upright or not!

I don't want to make her someone else's problem. I'm wondering if perhaps she's best suited to be fattened up & in a soup pot. It'd have to be someone else's as I don't eat chicken. There's no way I could end her life never mind process her.

Also, the group overall seems much calmer without her. Maybe it's just me not having to worried.

To me, any chicken that you are afraid of is an ingredient ready for the soup pot! My neighbor had 2 RIR roos that were mean and attacked, so they were skinned out and went in the freezer.

Trust me, I'm ready to donate to someone who would want to take her on.

She's about 5 months old. Eating flock raiser, but still light....think it's the heat. All of them don't feel like the weight is right yet, but we are in this horrible heat time.

Understand & agree. I'm willing to work with her, but I'm not certain if she'll respond. My biggest worry is that I'm going to see my Mom at the end of the month & 2 of my dogs are staying. The chi & the dane. I don't worry about the dane...his size & 1 paw move there's a dead chicken. The chi.....could have some major damage. My Dad will be here twice a day to feed & check on everyone, but that leaves the bulk of the day if she's out among everyone. I'm trying to see if I can come up with a temp solution to give her a bit more room to leave her in lock-down while I'm gone.

If I have to euthanize her...how? Don't want to go the let her attack my dane so he swats her route. He's been trained not to play with the chicks, but I did see him gruff & do a type of prance at them when they tried to steal his carrot. I' wouldn't be surprised if under those circumstances he swatted. Couldn't blame him, but I also don't want to undo training. He had a cockerel land on him the other day & after a few moments he just moved/walked a bit to get him off. I wish I had my camera to get a photo of them. He won't let me set one on him either. Big bugger.

I totally agree with BlueBaby. I give all my animals (dogs, cats, and chickens) all the respect they're due but I won't be subordinated by any of them. If I can't trust them or am afraid of getting bit, clawed, attacked, etc. even when I'm not doing anything wrong, then the animal has to go. I totally understand if you're not comfortable putting her in the pot but I'd recommend you give her to someone that is willing to take her. Just be sure to give full disclosure if they want her for purposes other than the pot. The only other option is to keep her and continue accommodating her special needs which is going to be hard on everyone, especially you.

If I can't trust them or am afraid of getting bit, clawed, attacked, etc. even when I'm not doing anything wrong, then the animal has to go. I totally understand if you're not comfortable putting her in the pot but I'd recommend you give her to someone that is willing to take her. I'm with you there. Always give full disclosure of the good & bad. Have to ready an ad I'm thinking.
