Arizona Chickens

I have a variety of breeds since my flock is divided into pures, egg layers and meat birds, but my primary focus is the Naked Neck Turken. I've found them to be the perfect breed out here as they are exceptionally heat tolerant, very feed efficient, have outstanding temperaments, and are very easy to breed for specific traits. I've divided my NNs into egg layers, which average 5-6 large to jumbo eggs each per week and some of my birds lay blue to green as well as pink eggs; pure NNs, which tend to run a little smaller in size, have nice meaty frames, and still supply me with 4-6 large to jumbo eggs per week on average; and my meat NNs, which include crosses with other breeds to increase size and rate of growth. So far even these meat NNs are giving me plenty of eggs in their pullet year, so I've no complaints about them at all.

I currently have pure Silver Grey Dorking eggs in the incubator (at least I hope they're pure), and will be working on them as my heritage breed with a focus on meeting APA standards.

And finally, I plan to add Russian Orloffs to my flock, but haven't purchased the hatching eggs yet. This is yet another dual purpose breed that purportedly leans toward being a meat breed...and I've read that they eat Fire Ants. In all seriousness this is the primary reason I want to get the breed. We have A LOT of fire ants on our property.

I also have some Easter Eggers, Bielefelders, Australorps, Barred Rocks, Dark Cornish and Cornish mixes, White Rocks, Dorking mixes, a Silkie, and several crosses on my property. The only birds I warn against raising out here are the Bielefelders, which really aren't heat tolerant and tend to die of heat stroke far too easily.

Those dorkings are so gorgeous been trying to find them myself. I just got an incubator and have 36 eggs to put in. Some pure some mixes. These are gonna be beautiful. I like the NN been trying to read up on them before getting any. Im trying to find a nice dual purpose breed, was going ro do meat chickens but theybare so messy lol. im really excited about my alohas. They are 3 months old.

I know there is a thread on here somewhere... that has chicks and chickens for sale... but I can't seem to find it....  Is anyone is AZ still hatching chicks?

HiHo HiHo, it's off to work I go.... :weee

I am. My temps have been holding steady 100°s for 48 hrs. Have a test egg from a nice olive egger and a nice blue egg, hopefully from the wheaten. Have 34 more ready for the actual hatch. These will be almost 2 days ahead. Ive got a couple houdan eggs, some cochin, wheaten and blue americana, andalusians, maran. Some pure some mixes and a bunch of other mixes.

How do the Alohas do in the 100+ degree heat? I've looked at them a couple times and just didn't know how heat tolerant they were.

They did fantastic. They were only 3-4 weeks old when it was still very hot. They feathered very early. Kept their brooder in my az room with heat only the first week. The were kept in a the outdoor growout coop. Thats where they still are they have so much room they love it.

And the pigs strike again!

This time the meat pig demolished my coop WHILE I STOOD AND WATCHING IN HORROR WHILE FEEBLY ATTEMPTING TO DISCOURAGE THE 500 LB BEAST

I have had enough.

I moved my coop into the safety of the show corral and built a temprary shade mechanism until I can build a full on coop that in NO WAY could be destroyed.

pig proof

and until then, i swear that pig is GOING to be getting a shock collar because I am so done.

no pity, no sympathy, no mercy. Just like she showed to my poor birds who are now stuck in a corral in their coop until I can find the time to build a better one.

life

explosion*

i need a pig whip.......

or a pokey thing.

you dont even want to KNOW what me jeans look like right now, especially after the stupid pig had a mud bath and attempted to attack a second time.

i swear when we slaughter her for meat im buying every pound of it and eating it for my birthday dinner.

Oh no. I'm hoping physically you're OK.

Is there a stronger structure for the pig?

Wonder why it's determined to free the trio.

Sounds like you've a lot of bacon & chops in your future.

I'd come help if I were closer. Maybe a barb wire perimeter? I'd suggest a moat, but here one dust storm of any size & it's pig heaven.

Tempe is as bad as an HOA. Just keep your chickens out of the line of sight when someone looks over the fence.

That would be difficult, since my hens are rarely in their coop....
my husband and I enjoy watching them chasing bugs all over the yard,
I just get annoyed when they get into my garden
most of the time they stay on their side of the fence, but sometimes it's just too tempting for them

So full body scan this morning, I have a few large bruises and feel stiff but otherwise okay , knock on wood. (I dont think I mentioned this yesterday in my angst, but she dirt-rolled me pretty good. Got stepped on a few times)

I do happen to know why, she wants to eat the good/healthy chicken feed that I bring for my birds, and so she destroys things to get to it.

unfortunately barbed wire wouldn't faze her at all.... her hide is too thick. now a moat isn't a bad idea, if I could get across XD

accept wait....pigs like water.

checked up on the Pol's this morning, they are also fine, Benatar (Benny) was attempting to crow.

im really startring to think that Mercury might be a girl! (cheering)

as for punk, he be the biggest sweetheart in the coop. i do mean big. like he towers over benny and Merc.
