Arizona Chickens

I have been looking at the different neighborhoods house-hunting. Here there are some older neighborhoods, trees and ~2 1/2 ac. lots, but no gardens, or animals like chickens or goats. Not even grass growing! I don't get it, why move to a place like that if you do not want to use it?

Elbow room? I grew up with the width of a driveway and small grassy walking around between my house and our neighbor's house. They use to watch me through my bedroom window, which was really creepy. Until we moved out here, I didn't know what it was like to have space and privacy. Now I can't imagine living any other way.

Yes, that is part of the attraction for me, too. Not being close to the neighbors would be nice. I looked at one place that backed up to a solar farm, and thought that would make a good neighbor! And, never complain about crowing or barking.

Now you're speaking my language. I grew up just like DesertChic in a suburb of Seattle. We would visit cousins in the country sometimes and I just knew that's how I wanted to live. Now I live on a 5 acre property at the end of a dirt road backed up to BLM land! It's not as green as the properties my cousins owned up the Pacific NorthWet, actually it kinda looks like a junk yard because my husband likes to keep spares of everthing and make a few extra bucks running loads of scrap metal on occasion. But his family has been in this area for 4+ generations, they even have their own family cemetary just a few miles up the road. He ran the backhoe to dig the grave for his own mother last year. I never imagined that just where you choose to live could be so "freeing" or so limiting.

That sounds exactly like what I am hoping to find! The cooler, and greener, the more expensive, though!

Yes, green costs lots of green! Looking pretty close in, too. One nice place, 5 ac zone AG, but gross apartments right next door! Apparently, zoning came too late there!
I envy you folks that have the acreage and in a zoned AG area. I had thought about it for a hot minute, but was worried about well water, maintaining your own septic system, the pros and cons of almost living off the grid. My finances weren't in order to take on such an ordeal so I had to settle for what I could afford back in 2008, but it does work for me. At least it's big enough to build my run and future coop.

There is a culdesac in front and back of my house, basically living on a peninsula. This is a view looking over my back yard past the run. The houses are packed together. --BB

Yes, those things are a concern, but having my own well I look at as a good thing. I am from CA and they started rationing water last year. It's a lot harder to ration water from your private well! I did not like the thought of killing my trees to save water for the golf courses and Big AG guys.
